I have been offered a nanny position which doesn't start until September.
I have been offered similar positions in the past where the family have let me down nearer the start date. I have turned down work because I was promised the position.
Could I suggest a retainer to ensure that this doesn't happen, if so how much?

Not really the done thing. The family are also taking a risk that you won't decide to take something else, so would you pay them a fee for keeping the job open for you?

I have read on here of contracts where there is a break penalty, if indeed you are let down as you suggest within a month of the start date.

Yes. I have had written into contract a retainer when job was 6mths time -
As you said you would be very annoyed if stop looking for perm work and do temp /ad hoc only to find in August they change their minds

Yes it works both ways and may give parents peace of mind knowing that they have a nanny who won't suddenly say in June I have a new job who wants me to start now

What about a retainer, but you work for them during those paid hours so that it is like an extended settling in period? Eg 1 day per week
