Live in nanny with horses

I have a lovely little place with land and stables and I have just found out I am pregnant. I am considering employing a live-in nanny but am wondering if there are any out there who would be interested in a horsey lifestyle. Basically the 'deal' would be free board for their horse in exchange for some help with mine, or for the horseless, the opportunity to ride my horses. Plus of course looking after the small person.

Obviously it will be a long way off - I'm planning on taking 12 months off, but I am definitely one who likes to plan ahead.

Does anyone know where I can start looking??

Sorry but I would not advise that. You risk getting someone who relies on you for their horses rather than the other way round, or someone who is messy or whatever and then you have to get rid of a livery.

I got my first nanny job via Horse and Hound. I didn't do the horses but they wanted a country nanny who was happy around horses as the child had ponies. I had plenty of horses to ride and they eventually bought me my own. When I moved on I went for two interviews where they had land and stables and were happy for me to bring my horse. However I opted to put my horse in full livery mainly due to working long hours and the family travelled a bit so would have needed care for dhorse anyway.

I'd suggest focusing on the nanny element first especially with a baby but I'm sure you'll find some one though who would love this job.

This sounds like an ideal job. My first nanny job had stables which they rented out to a lady with 3 horses. It was nothing to do with me but I got friendly with the lady (as she was in the garden every day!) and I ended up helping her muck out etc when she was away/ill/wanted company etc. I didn't have a clue about horses until then other than that I loved them, but it wasn't exactly difficult to learn how to scoop up a bit of poo and walk the horses to the field ;)
so although I'm not 'horsey' I would love another job that had horses I could help out with. Probably wouldn't ride them though.

This would be my dream job!
I'm sure you will be able to find a suitable nanny if you were offering free livery in return for yard jobs or if they were able to ride your horse in return for doing yard duties. I would also recommend trying Yard and Groom and Horse and Hound.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and hope it all works out well!

Thanks for all the positivity and sharing your experience. I'm increasingly thinking it might be a good idea.

I'm off to have a look at some of the sites listed to get an idea of how common this sort of vacancy might be...

For anyone interested this is the view of the stables and hacking that I have on my doorstep. I love my life and cannot wait to share it with a small person!

Beautiful views!

OK, I'm ready to start whenever you need me! Grin might need a spare stable to lock my kids in while I'm out hacking!

Are you still looking for someone for your family? :)

AuntieDee · 05/03/2015 16:18

I will be looking in the future but I am only 9 weeks pregnant so it will be a while yet... I think I got a bit panicky and caught up in the moment when I found out
