As of April 6th you will need to pay them a pension by law

Through a company?

Pensions have been something that has been starting for all employers for some time. There is something called the Staging Date which is when it starts for each payroll scheme.

If you started employing a nanny in Jan/Feb this year, then pension contributions start date is August 2017.
If you started before Jan this year, then use the link to find your particular date, using your PAYE scheme number.

It starts at 1% employer contribution + 1% employee contribution.

I think the OP means if you run your nanny through your own company payroll then the staging date which most nannies have of 2017 won't be accurate.

If you have a nanny via someone like mummy SOS or Asquith they will take care of the pension. That's what the elevated costs are supposedly for.

It depends how many employees the company has, if less than 50, the staging dates can be quite far away, especially if you only set up as an employer after 2012

I've just set up our pre-school pension scheme with a company called NEST and it was very straight forward. (I have no accounting background, although I did a bot of payroll with work a few years ago).
