Hello all!

I'm a nanny and my bosses have just asked me to think about becoming OFSTED registered. I'm all for it but have absolutely no idea how to go about it. I would love some hints and tips :)

And if anyone could explain how childcare vouchers work I would be forever grateful!

Thanks!

You need a
*valid first aid certificate that meets ofsted requirements
*insurance (Morton michel are pretty reasonable)
*level 2 (I believe) childcare qualification

It's pretty easy and mine was done within a month but I know a lot of people wait longer!

Not a clue how parents claim vouchers! But you register with their provider (eg. Edenred, compushare) then they get transferred to your bank account

As it's the voluntary register it's much easier for a nanny with regards to paperwork then a childminder!

As a nanny you would also have to be aware of Safeguarding/child protection price endures, health and safety in the home, alert the family to any dangers in the home and record the outcome, have a policy for giving medicines safely. You (not the setting) can be inspected by Ofsted.

Sorry predicted text altered. Think it was - be aware of health and safety.

Childcare vouchers are paid to you as part of your salary. They may be paid by the company your employer works for or via a specific voucher company.
The payments come typically once per month and do somethings get delayed, so keep an eye on when they come and chase employer if the voucher seems to have got stuck. They are usually paid direct to your bank account.
Vouchers are part of your taxable pay, so you will get a Gross salary, tax deducted, then your resulting Net pay will be made up of a payment direct from your employer and from the voucher.
It is usually easy to register with the voucher provider - your employer will provide you with the contact details. You can only register once you have your Ofsted registration through, as the voucher company need to know the Ofsted registration unique reference.

For Ofsted registration first you need a DBS check. Have a look at the FAQ on Ofsted DBS Application Portal. You MUST register for the DBS Update service.

Once you have that then you can apply for Ofsted registration via the Ofsted online system. You will need a Gov Gateway login. Ofsted Portal

You will need to complete the registration as a Home Childcarer.
One recent thing now is that the online system requires the ages of the children in your care - seems it's for stats purposes. Setting Address is the place at which you work. The rest is pretty self explanatory.

You will need Level2 in Childcare or Common Core Skills.
You will need to have Paediatric First Aid. It is recommended that this is a 12 hour course.
You will need nanny insurance. There are various providers for this. MortonMichel are one and they often do a discount if you are Ofsted registered. So ask about what the fee is as you are registering (so don't have a registration yet but will have later).

The whole process can take a while - may be several months, depends how quickly the DBS check comes back.
