Medicine at childminders

In the eyfs it states that
Medicines must not usually be administered unless they have been prescribed for a child by a doctor, dentist, nurse or pharmacist.
How do childminders interpret this? I've always taken it to mean I can not give over the counter medicine. The only exception to this is if a child suddenly gets a temperature, I phone the parent and ask to give them a dose of calpol. The parent then has to come and collect the child.

If a child needs calpol during the day, to maintain a normal temperature they are still unwell and generally should be at home.

What do other childminders do?

Similar to you Maryann. I also cared for a child who had a homeopathic remedy for excema once. I got the parent to detail it all in writing, but accepted it as it was not 'usual' for me to apply this lotion to children. I have also given calpol to a child with whiplash pain at parents written request.

I am a nanny. I administer calpol and teething products as needed; unless seriously poorly I generally administer without contacting parent (although let them know at the end of the day)

I ask parent to provide a named bottle of calpol. They sign a medication form to say it can be given if required without obtaining their permission before each dose. It also says it is their responsibility to inform me if the child has had medication within the 4 hours prior to the session. Actually if I want to give medicine then I try to contact them first to get verbal permission first.
If given they a dose parents are given a medication form to sign at pickup and a copy goes in the diary.

It's such a faff just for a dose of calpol!

I do the same as DearGirl, I give Calpol if I feel that I have to and tell the parents at the end of the day. I only call them if temperature really high or child really poorly.

HSMM re. the homeopathic "medicine" I don't think we have to do any paperwork to administer water!
