cost of Childminder for two kids in North London?

Hi, can anyone give me a round about price for a childminder in Haringey?

I've been offered a place to study Midwifery from September and need to figure out if it's doable.

Would like to keep my 3 year old who'll be 4 then at playgroup for his 15 hours. My DD will be 2 if that makes any difference to price.

Also, how soon should I start looking for September?

TIA

There will be childminders dropping off at your playgroup-ask around. This would be most convenient for u to keep your eldest at playgroup but u don't really get 15 free hrs anymore as u are paying for a childminder.

I'm in South East London and childminders round here are £50 per child per day. May do a small discount for siblings.

Will you get an nhs bursary? I think that includes some help with childcare costs.

I'd investigate now just to see who's around but you can find a cm pretty quickly really. You still pay the cm while they're at pre school though as you're filling a space they can't use for another child.

Your childcare grant should cover over 75% of your childcare.

I rang a childminder the other day. 50 per day for one child and 45 for second. Wow, nursery is cheaper.

Ben folds, is the childcare grant included in the NHS grant? I used the calculator online and it came up I was entitled 5500 which is nowhere near enough to cover childcare. Might have to defer a year until my eldest starts school Confused

See my DH earns a decent wage but with London rent there's not much left over after bills for childcare.

I'm surprised you can find a nursery for less than £50 a day in London!

If your eldest will be 4 by September then won't he be at school already or is he an early September birthday?

benfoldsfive · 16/01/2015 14:28

There is a childcare grant via student loans, they pay up to 85% dependant on income (with a London allowance) ring your local student finance.

ChuckNovice · 16/01/2015 14:42

I rang student finance and they said NHS student only get the minimum non - means tested loan £3200 for London.

I can find a nursery 8-6 for £325 a week for the pair of them. I wouldn't even need that much but days at uni would change so would need it in place.

DS birthday is the 6th of September.

Did you mention you were a parent? I don't mean that patronisingly, sf are ridiculous to get info and support from!

I had an NHS bursary and parents learning allowance and a childcare grant? I got vastly more in my last 2 years when I left my husband and had nil income but still got a fair amount as a married couple.

ChuckNovice · 16/01/2015 15:25

I did. The guy seemed really rude and unhelpfull on the phone so maybe I'll try again. He said because nhs students get their fees paid they don't get any more help. Arggghh. It's all so confusing.

Parents have different rights.

Ring the uni and speak to student support, they might have a scholarship or a bursery you can apply for too.

Thanks so much benfolds, I'm going to do some more research. I think the childcare grant may be attached to the NHS bursary so I'll give them a call for some more info.
