CM Club: Home Contents Insurance - problem with accidental cover, they won't give us because I'm a childminder !!!

Hi

Having a nightmare at the moment, 1st OFSTED cauing me problems, then moving house may all fall through and now Home Contents insurers (Tesco) are telling us we've lost accidental damage cover because I'm a childminder!!!

Even if the house sale falls through because of the problems we're having, we'll still need home contents insurance for this house. Problem we have is we have a big ongoing claim (re: legal side of dh loosing his job on xmas eve) so will have to stay with Tesco but as soon as that's over, we want to switch insurers due to this problem with me being a childminder.

Is this normal to loose all accidental damage cover because of this? We've argued that it's no different to us having a large family of our own but they insist we are high risk and they just won't allow us to have accidental damage cover anymore, even if the damage is not as a result of childminding. We've said we don't mind paying a higher premium because of the high risk but they just won't have it.

Do you all have the same problem? If not, can anyone recommend a company who will give us accidental damage cover?

Thanks

Hi looneytune, I have my insurance through NCMA, who seemed to organise it for free for the first year and then just send me reminders! It's specifically for CM's - give them a call as they're really helpful - Good Luck

we're with direct line and they said its ok but we're not covered for breakages by mindee'sif that helps.

Thanks a lot for that, gives me hope

Looks as if there is specialist insurance available to cover this event... so perhaps most standard home insurance policys exclude Childminders.

Some policys I have found:
HomeMinder
HomeMinder - from NCMA Website, looks like same policy as link above.
HomeCare from MortonMichel

Try NFU as well we run a B&B and couldn't get contents insurance at all but they gave us £2 million public liability £10 million employers insurance plus contents for £100,00 all for the princely sum of £290

Thanks so much

When I became a childminder my insurance company (NU) told me accidental damage would only cover my family and visitors not my mindees which is a bit stupid really but I changed to barclays bank and they have covered me fir accidental cover for family and mindees for the same amount I was paying before.

We've just moved too as you know. Our insurance is arranged through our mortgage provider who had no problems with me being a childminder. It's Cheltenham and Gloucester if any help.
