Hello! wonder if any childminder out there could help? I know someone who is becoming a childminder, she has had quite a few problems with her mental health in the past e.g depression! but very long term! Is it right that her doctor didnt have to state this in her medical that he does for offsted? I really would like to know as very worried about her becoming a child minder.

are you worried she will harm the children in her care? is she depressed at the moment - i had long term PND - 4 years - made a total recovery and have been well for 3 years - i am pursuing a new career.....don't think her having had depression should ruler her out of doing something she wants to do inless immediate harm would come to anyone...

not a childminder sorry- but i think it is more of an issue if she is currently depressed - if she is getting herself together to start a new job - sounds like she is a well person at the moment...

Not really worried she will harm the children, but she cant cope at all with her little one! she has had bad bad depression for nearly 10 years! and she tried to harm herself 5 times! she also is suffering from pnd! and does seem to cry all the time! i just cant beleive a doc does not have to disclose this information!

eeeek! found it hard to cope with my own LO when had PND, never mind a house full!! she obviously trying to sort herself out - but i probably would not want to leave my child with someone seriously depressed who self harmed - that is a whole different world....

lulunaticmama · 04/10/2006 13:56

does she think she will find it easier to cope with her own kids , if other kids around? so that she is not one to one with them?

h27 · 04/10/2006 13:58

yes thats what i thought! trouble is what do i do! i dont want to get too involved but am finding it hard to believe as when i became a child minder they went in the ins and outs of everything as you would expect when children are involved! Thanks for your advice!!

i'm sure the doc has to disclose any medical background that will affect her job
phone childrens infromation services dont give names but just ask

looneytune · 04/10/2006 13:59

i thought they had top disclose everything! i'm a cm and was worried my pnd would be a problem but they knew it was all sorted and a couple of years ago and was fine. this sounds different to me though.

i can;t really say - it's a quandary - have you tried talking to her genlty, suggesting maybe not the best time to start a new business..if she persists in going ahead - i don;t know what you can do - don't suppose your doctors records are checked for this sort of thing, only criminal records.....might be a wait and see scenario...

When I did my childminding approval I had to fill in a medical questionnaire for OFSTED, including past and ongoing medical conditions. AFAIR I then had to take the form to my surgery and they checked it, added anything relevant and sent it off. I doubt she'd get away with not mentioning it - presumably it's in her records? And I assume the gp would be required to note it as an ongoing condition. It would be hugely wrong of him/her not to mention how bad her metal health has been/is when she's looking to care for other people's children.

lulunaticmama · 04/10/2006 14:08

sounds like this will be picked up on...might it be better you mentionming it first as her friend..

dmo · 04/10/2006 14:11

i would talk to cis first to get the right info then if they think that her medical history should be told to ofsted then as a friend i would tell her

pol26 · 04/10/2006 14:11

I'm sure that she should have mentioned it and i'm sure her GP had a duty to put it on the form... if they haven't I don't think OFSTED will be too happy.
