Hello, I was just wondering how much you pay babysitters for outside normal hours (i.e. after 6pm)?

Depends on area and experience of sitter from £4/5 an hr for a 14-16yr old friends daughter/son babysitting or teenager neighbour - £7/8 an hr for a nursery nurse up to £10/12 an hr for a highly experienced nanny/nurse/maternity night nanny

8.00 per hour for nursery key worker

lovelynannytobe · 13/10/2014 18:32

At the very least NMW for the babysitter's age but would expect more tbh depending on experience and area you live.

What EastMids said.

Also probably look to pay youngster minimum £20 and adult at least £30. It's quite usual to charge a minimum amount for obvious reasons.

The family whose DC aged 1 and 3 I looked after until 2013 paid £8ph. I didn't have any child care qualifications, I was in my early 20s with just personal family experience but they seemed to like me and it was the south east.

I wouldn't want a babysitter charging just NMW with my own DC, like nanny said.

concernedaboutheboy · 13/10/2014 20:38

Our new babysitter has just said £6 p/h, and that seems a bit measly as we're in the south east and she has a lot of relevant experience. Although technically above NMW for her age... feels a bit mean.

Tapewormuprisings · 14/10/2014 08:41

I'm a babysitter in the south east and charge £8ph with a 3 hour minimum. If it's a bit further away, or NYE i charge £10ph. This seems standard for the area.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/10/2014 09:56

South East and £10ph and minimum of 4hrs - get asked lots so obv not over charging

Tbh I have charged this for about 5yrs so may up it 50/1,00 an hour

FlorenceMattell · 14/10/2014 12:19

South East experienced nanny
If children are up need bathing etc, normal nanny rate self employed as will declare so £12 per hour. Once asleep £8 - £10 per hour depending on age of children. Also charge mileage. After midnight £12 per hour.

I think if someone is self employed, and just doing further work in the evening - like Florence , then that's clearly a different situation from a 6th former or student earning a bit of spending cash, and that's probably where you'll get your differences of opinion.

Personally, when mine were small, money was tight. If we'd had to pay out £50 on top of whatever the theatre / dinner / drinks / whatever we were going to cost, then we just wouldn't have been able to go out.
My ds(18) and dd(15) babysit now, and generally think of it as an evening when they get to help someone out, play with some little kids toys, and choose what to watch on someone else's TV. Any money they are given is almost a bonus - £20 means a lot to them. Indeed, my dd sits for my SiL every 3 months or so, for free, just so she can claim the experience, for other (paying) people plus of course she loves her little cousins.

That's why you'll never get full agreement on these threads.

Thanks so so much for your replies. They are very useful. I might go for £7 as we are not in London. It is for 6 hours so should be quite a nice total for a non-nursery carer.
