Toddler not napping at new childminders - tell me this passes?

She's 2.8 and definitely still needs and wants a nap in the afternoon. She's also very happy with the new CM. It's been 2 weeks now and though she goes happily up to the bedroom, she just doesn't sleep. Which means she's a mess by early evening!

Is this just a settling in thing? Has anyone had this? CM is very helpful and we're working on ways to get her to sleep but I'm worried this might not pass. Selfishly because I get home about an hour before her normal bedtime so if she's not napped I don't really get to see her Sad

It may be that she is outgrowing naps at 2.8yrs. Does she nap for you at weekend?

I'm sure your CM is doing this already, but to have 20mins quiet time prior to going to sleep will help DD to wind down.

If your DD does need to sleep then I'm sure it will settle down, it can take a few weeks, if she is otherwise happy with CM then I would try not to worry!

My DS had a 2hr nap religiously until about that age then just stopped. He was a nightmare from about 4pm but the transitional period lasted til just over 3. He'd still have a sleep if in the car though. Feel like a bit of a crap mum as I was happy as he'd be fast asleep by 7pm and I'd get my evening to myself instead of nagging him to go to sleep til 9pm!

Neither of my dc's ever slept well at the cm's despite being brill daytime sleepers at home, I have accepted it (& more often than not it means a very early bedtime on a cm day!)Smile

Don't tell me it lasts that long, Bitch, I can't cope with 4 months of only seeing a tired and whiny mess in the evenings or putting her to bed within ten mins of being home!

She's definitely not ready to drop her naps. The odd quiet day maybe, but in general she needs a nap and happily goes to sleep at home.

Sigh. Oh well. I've always relied on the fact she's been a great sleeper so this has surprised us! Normally she is only in 3 or 4 days a week so it's not the end of the world. This week she's in 5 solid days, I can't even imagine what she'll be like by Friday if she doesn't nap all week! Poor CM. Maybe she'll just have to pass out at some point this week and that will start off some decent napping.

It's a refreshing change to hear a parent wanting the child to get the sleep they need - too often the complaint is that they do nap at CM or nursery and parents ask for daytime naps to be dropped in the belief that the child will go to bed earlier (which doesn't usually work).

I suspect that there is more going on at the CM which your little girl is loath to miss out on, and she may go down more easily once the novelty wears off a bit. I also agree about the need time to wind down a bit before trying to put her down for a nap. It may sound obvious but I am also careful to try not to get the older children too excited about whatever it is we will be doing while the little ones nap - better that they think we're just going to have another story or a bit of colouring rather than cooking or painting, for example.
