Part-time live-nanny

I was wondering if such a role exists? I am starting to explore our childcare options for Jan 2016 when I return to work after having DC2. We will have a 1 yr old and a 3 yr old. Our 3 yr old will be attending Cylch Meithrin (welsh language preschool) probably 3 mornings a week. We live in South Wales.

I work 3 consecutive days (Mon to Wed), so would only need childcare on these days. Both myself and DH have jobs where we have early morning on-call commitments and often finish after 6pm so having a nanny at home while we get ready for work etc.. would be ideal.

I thought having a live-in nanny, who would live with us from Sun night or Mon morning, till Wed evening would be ideal. But who would be interested in such a role and living in two places?! Would this be of interest to a young, new nanny or possibly a semi-retired nanny? Or, indeed, anyone!?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would have thought it highly unlikely that you would have any pool of applicants for a job like that.
However lots of nannies work 12hour days and it might suit someone to do 3 long days.

I used to do this and charged £140 per 24hrs as I started as a maternity nanny. It suited me as I had parents to go back home to for the rest of the week. It may also suit a variety of people if the salary was enough or they could do part time the rest of the week.

It could be possible if you advertise your needs as you say it might suit someone close to retirement or who only needs to work part time. You will need to keep in mind accommadation offset as per government guidelines to make sure you do pay minimum wage. As you will need the nanny the same days every week you will need to employ them.

Would you be able /want them to live with you all the week and they maybe do a course the other two days near you. Or yes a nanny who still lives at home or flat shares who would live with you part time and there the rest of the time, you would need to pay more than a live in rate though as they would need to pay for accommodation / food etc for part of the week.

I have already seen that kind of offer. I think I would like to do that kind of job. Now I have to be honest, the number of applicants will depend on the salary offer.

Because obviously, the person the person would still pay a rent for the full week, so the live in would be a part of the job and not a part of the benefits/salary.

So, my answer would ne yes, you will probably find nannies ready to do that, but paid the same rate as a live out.

If someone accepts less money, I would wonder why ;)

Is there any reason they couldn't live with you 7/7 but only work 3 days a week?

You might well find a very good candidate that way who would get 36hr work (can you round up to 37.5 and thus full time in 3d?) and then they can do a course 2d a week or just have a really civilised life. My housemate when we'd first graduated worked 3x12.5 hour shifts a week and loved having 4 days to herself to go to the gym, see friends, read novels and enjoy herself, I suspect other people might feel similarly

Lucylouby · 05/10/2014 22:22

I would have done this job when I was younger and still living with my parents. I wouldn't have seen it as living with you, more staying over on work nights though, so would have expected to be paid as a live out nanny. I would still have lived at my parents the majority of the time.

Greenfizzywater · 06/10/2014 06:33

I'd agree, you either want live out but stay overnight some nights, so expect to pay more than normal live out, or part time live in where they livein all week but only work three days, so pay less than normal live jn rates but provide food etc all week.

Yerazig · 06/10/2014 07:46

For a job like this i would as well expect a live out wage but stay over the 3 nights and if part of the reason you wanted live in to cut cost you may as well employ a local live out nanny who's happy to do the long days.

Hanl30 · 06/10/2014 09:05

You will probably find a local live out nanny who doesn't mind longer days.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/10/2014 10:52

What time do you need to leave the house?

Is the early start the only reason you want live in?

A friend once did 6-6 so unless much earlier you could get a live out

Or nanny start early mon an stay over mon and tue night and go home wed iyswim
