Nanny appraisal - a couple of questions

Hello, any input appreciated.

I'm about to organise our nanny's first appraisal and after a browse on here and a Google, I'm pretty sorted on how to arrange it, how to structure the meeting, what to include etc, but there are a couple of things I am unclear about. In case it helps, she is a live-out, part time nanny - she does 2-3 days a week for us, 10 hours per day.

Firstly, we want to do her appraisal in the evening so both myself and DH can be there. Does that mean we pay the nanny for the time she is here?

Secondly, if there is any professional development that she wants to do, e.g. courses etc, whose responsibility is it to pay for this?

Personally I would pay her for the time.

Personal development would be for her to pay unless this is something you want her to do. It might also be a nice positive gesture to meet the cost or share the cost of something she'd like to do and which might ultimately benefit your children. But totally up to you.

As a nanny I've never expected to be paid for appraisals. To be honest mine have never been as formal as that. Mostly I have stayed to have dinner or a glass of wine with my employers, as both live in and live out, and its been an informal chat about things.

I also wouldn't expect my bosses to pay for courses unless they were the ones asking me to do them. An offer of sharing the cost is nice but probably isn't expected.

On the courses, we've offered to pay for courses which were beneficial to the kids. It makes sense financially because the course cost is not taxable, so an 80 pound course gives your nanny the benefit of a 100 pounds of her pre-tax income. For example, we paid for the common core course required for ofsted registration and for yearly first aid thereafter. On the latter, I was keen to choose a provider a trusted...

I should add that we expect our nanny to do CPD, so we pay for it. I know we are unusual in that, but as it happens it is also v useful as a retention tool.

Cooking for children, infant nutrition, fussy eaters.

Courses on those topics could be handy Olivia. Does Mumsnet Academy have any?

Was lurking for personal reasons, my mother's help's first appraisal coming up.

We also offered a Montessori certificate, but our nanny felt she would not have enough spare time ( it would have taken a year).

For us yearly first aid refresher is the key thing.

Have to admit, I have no idea what courses might be available. Our nanny used to work in a nursery so she'll have more idea than me. I guess I was thinking along the lines of child development stuff. I just think I ought to offer her something - she would be entitled to professional development if she was still at the nursery after all.
