Evening childcare for 1 year old - advice needed

Hello,
Am looking into the possibility of hiring childcare for a few hours every weekday evening, to collect my 1 year old son from nursery and look after him until I get back from work. Can anyone give any advice on how to best to find someone suitable, what I should be looking for, and what it might cost please?
Thanks

What exactly would the hours be, it may suit someone working at the nursery.
It may fit with a students college hours.

Cost will vary, minimum of £7 an hour I would expect. Probably £10+ realistic for qualified, experienced person. More in city locations.

If it is most evenings then it is not ad-hoc work so you need to factor in Employers NI and payroll admin costs.

There may be costs associated with collecting from nursery unless you live very close and walkable (at night in Winter).

May find sites like gumtree.com childcare.co.uk and mumsnet local useful places to advertise.

I know someone at my little one nursery used to finish at 6pm and take a little boy home to his house a few times a week for 2hrs til parents got home.

Unfortunately, I think this type of help can be tricky to find. I'm a childminder and get a fair few enquiries very similar to yours from parents who are really struggling to find anyone willing. I'm happy to look after children for the full day, until quite late in the evening but I wouldn't go out to collect at dinner time for the sake of only two hours pay. You may find that you have to pay quite a high hourly rate to attract somebody and it might actually work out cheaper overall to move your child from the nursery to a childminder or a nanny share type arrangement.

May I suggest and share something with.I find this website www.ecrocus.com which works well in France with PTA and parents.Found an 'ecrocus' called Super Nannies where you can place an add the good thing is that its is by invitations only and only nannies known by families worth a try !

Thanks for the advice everyone. When I was originally looking for childcare I found the childminders in my area (Barnet in Herts) weren't any more flexible with hours than the nurseries - in fact quite a few finished at 6pm and my little one's nursery is 6.30pm. I'm wondering if I should try looking again though - is it possible to get a regular childminder who works til 7 or 7.30pm (a few days a week)?

I would do those hours a few days a week and indeed until recently was doing 6.30am to 6.30pm for a parent. They have now changed jobs and start at 8 and finish at 4!

However I would not even consider picking up from a Nursery at 6.30pm and caring for a child for 2 hours. I don't think it would be fair on the child to be honest. I would ask the Nursery if they can do it some around here will open earlier or close later but they do make a hefty charge for it.

Can you change your hours to finish earlier and start.earlier? Do you have a DP or DH who could do this?

Umbrelladilemma · 20/09/2014 06:53

Agree with the suggestion to ask nursery staff. I would start by asking your child's key worker if they would do it. I wouldn't ask the nursery manager as they may not want to encourage it.

I used to do this with DD but it was only on an ad-hoc basis.
