Nanny: pay for extra hours?

LightTripper · 07/09/2014 13:34

How does this work?

We need a nanny for regular hours usually, but will occasionally need a longer day (usually starting an hour earlier).

How is this dealt with? Do I pay a pro rated rate, a higher rate, or give time off in lieu?

If I pay extra, how much notice do I need to give the payroll company, or can it go on the following month's pay?

Thanks!

Got some good responses to my ad by the way, thanks for all the feedback on that!

The easiest way is to give time off later on.

So say on a Monday they do 2 hours extra. You then find another day that week (or the following week) where they get to do 2 hours less.
The total hours for the month remains the same. You can also be more generous and give them more time off, so if working an hour extra, they get 2 hours off later.

If that is not possible, then agree an overtime rate and pay that via the next payroll run. How much notice the payroll company will need may vary, will depend when they run the payroll, so it is a question to ask them.

I would just agree overtime rate and tell payroll each month

Early starts and late finishes most would rather have extra money than time off for. Beside it can be hard to give the free time if weeks of work and overtime given.

Thanks! Only problem is there might be a bit of a lag as I tend to be busy and not busy in chunks. I'll discuss with whoever we like and see what works!

I've always been paid overtime cash in hand. As do many nannies I know.

I know this happens but I wouldn't be comfortable with it Sad Basically I like being able to slag off tax dodgers without being one myself Blush

The same I just get paid the cash which every single nanny I know does. But if you don't want to do it that way and if you can't guarantee any time of for exchange I would just not it weekly what overtime there has been and the end of each month tell the pay role company.

I get cash in hand and run it through HMRC with the rest of my self employed income. I do a bit of SE work though.
