Ex-childminders, what job did you do after childminding ?

I have enough of childminding. I'm constantly stressed. I'm always worrying that I don't do enough paperwork wise. I can't cope with the insecurity of the job. I love the children but I think I'm a shit childminder because my paperwork keeping is not great. I want a complete change of direction so what have you done after childminding ? Do you think I should go to a career advisor ? Thank you for your help !

I could have written this post!! Bumping for similar request for info! Hmm

BlinkingHeck · 20/08/2014 20:42

Just finished minding at the start of the holidays. Currently a SAHM.
But will be looking for something soon. No idea what to do!
Enjoying time with my own children though and will be doing some house projects like decorating, gardening and painting some furniture once they are back at school Smile

I hated it for similar reasons.

BlinkingHeck · 20/08/2014 20:43

Oh and trying to get fit again after an an ankle injury.

Needapositivechange · 20/08/2014 21:21

It is making me feel ill...

I gave it up for similar reasons and went back to sales. Much less stress, even with ridiculous targets and bitchy colleagues...

BlinkingHeck · 20/08/2014 21:30

Needapositivechange - it made me feel ill too.Hmm
I'm about 4 stone overweight due to eating due to stress and boredom and have been extremely down. Can you afford to take some time out for yourself?

Needapositivechange · 20/08/2014 21:34

Blinking - I'm also 4 stones overweight because of all the comfort eating :-( I wish I could take time out but I can't..ohmyarsing-I'm going to look at sales as well as I have experience. In an ideal world, I'd like to work with animals.

Are you level 3 qualified? Can you do nursery work?

Needapositivechange · 21/08/2014 10:49

Nope not level 3 qualified...wouldn't want to work in a nursery to be honest..or maybe a childminding assistant !

I went from childminding to nannying, which is what I did before I had my 2 children. My kids were teens at this point and didn't need me at home after school. It was nice to get my home back to normal and nice to be working for just one set of parents and get the benefits that being employed brings - like paid holidays.

Sunnyshine · 21/08/2014 10:55

My last day childminding last Friday. Am taking a little time to reclaim my house, clean, re carpet down stairs and then have a new job at a school in October! We have loads of transferable skills for any job, you just need to sell them well!;

ACM88 · 21/08/2014 13:58

It really depends on what qualifications you have, and hours you need to work?

You could with a level 2 certificate work in a children's centre? Maybe do sessional work in crèches, less responsibility and less hours.

It's a long tiring job, and even though I've only been doing it for 2.5yrs, I'm feeling it more and more. This job really does have a shelf life.

You could keep paying your registration and insurance though so that you can come back to it if you want too!

Jackie0 · 21/08/2014 14:02

I can't imagine having a boss again after being self employed for so long.

Lucylouby · 22/08/2014 20:37

Jackie, that's how I feel. I can't imagine having a boss again and being told what to do all the time. I love getting up and knowing I can choose what we do today. I'm nowhere near giving up being a cm (although I imagine once my children are all grown up I will be desperate to get my house back, reclaim it from all the toys) but I have no idea what I would want to do next.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 22/08/2014 20:51

People who I know as ex-childminders became a foster carer, a fitness instructor, worked in a pub, a teaching assisitant, and someone running an after school club.

Childminding is a popular,
If sporadic occupation where I work!

fatowl · 23/08/2014 21:00

I was a CM from 1995-2004, had a gap as a SAHM as we went overseas, then I qualified to teach English as a foreign language.
I now work part time at a language centre.
Management do give me a lot of the younger age groups, because that's where I am more experienced, but do enjoy it all.
I had NVQ3 in Early Years

happychappy · 25/08/2014 08:25

I work for a charity. I finished nannying/childminding last month. It took 2 years to find something I wanted to do

anewyear · 25/08/2014 14:26

Im still minding, but I only have after schoolers,
But I also work in Pre School 8.45 - 1pm.. love it Smile

gingeme · 26/08/2014 22:37

Glad I found this thread. I've been CM just over a year and think I could be doing more. I love the fact it fits in with my own dc but feel a bit of a struggle keeping up with Ofsted paperwork and new legislation etc. As I only have cypop but would maybe like to become a classroom assistant or even a nursery teacher what sort of courses do I need to be doing ?

kgal · 26/08/2014 23:04

I went from being a childminder to being an outreach worker at a children's centre. Best move I ever made, although being level 3 qualified was essential.

I am about to Retire from Childminding after 12 years! It has been a wonderful time - I had to work when my own children were young - interest rates went from 7.25% in 1992 to 16.25% :(

We have children for no more than 3 max 4 full days and on rare occasions (mum has sibling baby or father killed or Parents part - we have done 5 days and more :( not to be recommended :(

Why not 5 days ? well you have a young child, with a temperature and teething and nappy rash (from acid output when teething) for 5 days and you wish you had not. Apart from which, children really should be with Mother as Primary Carer - I know there are arguments for Fathers being Primary carer ... BUT and thats a huge BUT !

We have babies from 6.30 am to 8.45pm regular days and often later to 9 and 10 pm with bathing; baby lotion massage and milk ; teeth cleaning and story times and some overnight (we have overnight license for 4 as big home)

It has been wonderful - many days out at Hayling Island; Lepe Beach and Country Park ; Studley Grange Butterfly World. We have a Mercedes Viano MPV LWB extended and 6 Britax Evolva, Ultra 1,2,3 car seats :) and in the huge boot toys and Porta Loo so no public toilets :)

Best of all the Govt. and EECU paid me to do a Degree in Early Years Education & Childcare :) and I specialized in Autistic Spectrum and "Undesirable Behaviour"
