what are they? what's the going rate for a childminder and are free nursery/pre school places for 3 yr olds available everywhere or is it a bit patchy? how many hours a day is it usually?

senora we are in derby and CMs charge £2.50-£3 per hours IME.
Nurseries £25-£30 a day I think. Free places are available to everyone, it?s the law of the land. We use a fabbbbbbbb nursery school in Derby city centre. 2.5hrs/day but you can do full days (and pay for the bit in the middle) i fthat suits.

Why might one ask? Are you moving to this neck of the wooods???

SenoraPostrophe · 19/09/2006 11:37

ooh, OK, that sounds good.

yes: we're looking at moving there. dh wants hills and I want to be 2 hrs or less away from Lincoln and derbyshire fits the bill. we've been looking at sheffield/bakewell/chesterfield and somebody said matlock was good, but it looks a bit inaccessible.it's a bit scary though as I really don't know that part of the country and I have to get dh out of the habit of speaking in a comedy northern accent whenever anyone mentions yorkshire.

hadn't really looked at derby city though: what's that like? how far away are the hills?

OP posts:
SenoraPostrophe · 19/09/2006 11:39

also if you did 5 hrs at a nursery with the free place that would be what, a tenner a day? (she asks hopefully).

Hi Senora.

Hey I was born in Sheffield, grew up in peak district villages, lived in Matlock until recently (now in Nottingham).

I did some work for you a while ago (remember me.... Angela in RL?)

Matlock is a great place to live, not inaccessible at all. Any questions, give me a shout. I still have the same email address and phone no.

SenoraPostrophe · 19/09/2006 11:47

have you changed your username?

OP posts:
clumsymum · 19/09/2006 11:47

yep. but it's um... easy ... to remember who I was !!

katzg · 19/09/2006 11:48

Senora - i'm in Sheffield, DD1 goes to both a nursery and preschool, the nursery knocks off the voucher bit and it costs me about £115 for 1.5 days inc meals per month, without the vouchers it is £29 plus £1.50 for food per day. The preschool she goes to to put her in from 9.00 - 3.15 costs an additional £3.32 inc food or £2.50 exc food on top of the vouchers.

SenoraPostrophe · 19/09/2006 11:52

cm: oh good - thought I was going funny then!

katz - do you mean 115 per month for 1.5 days per week?

OP posts:
katzg · 19/09/2006 11:54

yep! sorry i didn't make it very clear! i'm not sure how much it is each session because of the way they do our bills but monthly we pay about £115 inc food for 3 sessions which is 1.5 days. does that make sense?

Clary · 19/09/2006 12:42

well we are not very hilly in Derby itself. My bro lives in Sheffiled and he is much nearer the Peak District (which is in Derbys) than we are IYSWIM. I would say a good half-hour from Matlock and we are in the north of Derby as well.
Matlcok is nice tho the A6 (the main road to it really) is a PITA. Depends what you want. I like Derby as we have facilities such as swimming pools, good shops, lots of parks etc. Nice park in Matlock having said that.
Nursery wise, I have always done the 2.5hr sessions on a one a day basis, but I think if you use daycare they just knock the total off your bill. Our nursery school (note the difference) has to charge for the time between a mornign session and an afternoon session. does that make sense?

We do talk a bit fooony here an'all me duck (did you see Robert Lindsay finding out about his past in Ilkeston t'ooother day?)

ginmummy · 19/09/2006 12:45

'Ay up me duck' - fantastic!

I'm from South Yorkshire, grew up in North Derbyshire and now live in Nottinghamshire, so I can turn the accent on and off whenever I want!

You know you're home when "chuffin' 'el" makes sense!

SenoraPostrophe · 19/09/2006 12:49

hmm - dh really does like those hills! but we also need to be near a big-ish city. maybe it will be sheffield after all.

I did see Robert Lindsay - thought it was a really good programme. I like to see famous people feeling guilty about being snobby! dh is from norfolk so you´d think he'd have got over his thing about funny accents, but there you go.

ih yes: and how much is child benefit these days?

Hey ginmummy snap snappity snap. Where are you exactly now.

SenoraPostrophe · 19/09/2006 12:51

lol. I had to expalin to dh that "chuff-nut" wasn't the inofensive silly nickname he thought it was only a few months ago. (my family are from lincoln you see: I am immune)

ginmummy · 19/09/2006 12:51

Sunny Mansfield! Where abouts are you?

PandaG · 19/09/2006 13:02

I'm in Sheffield too. I am a childminder and charge £3.30 ph, but that is inclusive of meals, snacks etc.

BTW I am originally from Norfolk, and we go back there regularly, so my DC's could end up with a very interesting accent!

clumsymum · 19/09/2006 13:16

Hi Ginmummy, We're in Hucknall, not far from you then.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 19/09/2006 13:26

don;t know about childcare costs - but know the area you're looking at well - like clumsymum I was born in Sheffied and grew up in the peak district. It's such a wonderful area. I'd love to go back if I could work up there. If I did I'd probably live in Hathersage - really nice size - definitely a village and not a town - some good shops - lovely green grocer, couple of cafes and a good restaurant, and 20 mins into Sheffield.

charleymouse · 19/09/2006 14:34

Hi
nearly snap GM & CM just a slightly different order. I'm from North Derbyshire , grew up in South Yorkshire and now live in North Nottinghamshire - Worksop.

I have to say SP North Notts is a good bet given your criteria as it borders Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, is near the A1 & M1 for getting up down the country and on the A57 to Lincoln. I used to commute to Lincoln daily and it was a pleasant enough drive.

I do work in Sheffield though and DD is at nursery there. It costs £30.30 per day inc of nappies, meals and snacks. That is the rate for a 1 year old it is slightly more if younger and slightly less if older. The link below shows her nursery but it has further info on it.

I can definitley reccomend the North of Sheffield as it is on the edge of the Peak District. Also Sheffield is the countrys greenenst city. Can you tell I am moving back here later in the year?

katzg · 19/09/2006 15:07

i would defineatly recommend sheffield, the S10 S11 areas are very nice, schools are good too, also very quick for getting out into the peaks, it takes us about 25mins to get somewhere nice to walk

SenoraPostrophe · 19/09/2006 19:34

how is it the greenest city? lots of trees or lots of recycling?

OP posts:
clumsymum · 19/09/2006 19:55

Senora,

Lots of trees, and also the quickest city to get out of, i.e. from the city centre to the heart of rural peak national park in 25 mins.

katzg · 20/09/2006 10:23

the green refers to the amount of green space per head. its fab, i live 2 mins from a great park, but there are also loads to chose from.
