Becoming a nanny

Hello,
I'm just about to become a nanny for a 13 month old baby, I was just wondering what sort of documentation I will need to carry out to comply with Ofsted? xx

Nannies do not have to follow EYFS at present, so documentation is fairly minimal.

You need a contract.
You need public liability insurance
You need a paediatric first aid certificate
You need common core training, or minimum level 2 childcare training
You need to know about safeguarding children and know the relevant contact at local authority for reporting concerns.

Nannies do not have to be Ofsted registered in England. It is only really for parents to be able to use Childcare Vouchers.

You will need a DBS check. If you have had one done by Ofsted in the recent past and you have signed up for the update service, then contact Ofsted for advice as they will probably be able to accept that check. If you are not signed up for the update service you may need to do a new check.

From Sept all new applicants for registration have to sign up to DBS update service.

Ofsted has a guide to registration. There are also other guides online from various people including nannynick who posts on here.
It will help to have an understanding of how to complete the online registration form as it is not just for nannies.

I wrote a guide back in 2013 so it is a bit out of date now and is based on the manual form but it should help for completing the online registration. Please do let me know if you spot anything that has changed. The new online registration system should pick the right questions to ask you now based on the provider type - home childcarer - so should skip questions that are not relevant, unlike the old paper form.

Unofficial guide to nanny Ofsted registration

Yes Cindy is right about the new DBS Update service requirement. Ofsted has details here on their Register as a Home Childcarer page.
