going from nursery/after school club to nanny

We have been using a nursery for our 5 children, 2 have been in the toddler/preschool rooms and 3 in after school club. It has been costing around £2000 per month.

We are wondering whether we may be better off employing a nanny but I was looking for experiences of changing to a nanny are there advantages or disadvantages you have found

I doubt a nanny would cost less once all costs taken into account, assuming you need 50 hours care a week.

Your current cost sounds low, are youbin an area where costs are low? What salary are nanny jobs advertised at in your area?

Would you provide a car? As a nanny I could not fit 5 children in my car and suspect that is the case for many nannies.

Yes we are in the north west, the nursery is £30 per day per child and after school club is £7 per day. The nanny agencies we spoke to ranged from £375-£450 a week for a nanny.

We wouldnt provide a car as we dont have one ourselves (we use public transport) so hadn't even thought of it!

Is that inc

Is that including tax? Our nanny is 4 days a week and including tax is £2k a month.

Advantage is more control over holiday times and flexibility and illness!

Is that net or gross? My nanny gets £10 per hour net, I have her two days as week (21 hours total) and it's only a fraction below £1300 per month (to be fair that includes mileage, but still over £1200). Tax and NI really add up.

You need to know if the salary range the agency is saying is Net or Gross.
Many jobs on NannyJob Job Search do not give salary, so hard to know what salaries are in that area. I would expect it may be anywhere from £8 to £12 gross per hour.

If taking £10 gross per hour, then if nanny is doing 50 hours per week, that is £28,571 per year (including Employers NI). If it were £10 net, then it would be (assuming 1000L taxcode) £37,587
So you can see that you really do need to know if salary range is Gross or Net.

Would your public transport costs increase if you had a nanny? Younger children would be taken out during the day, some things may be in walk distance but others may not. In school holidays taking all the children out somewhere may involve a walk or going on bus/train.

Your nursery may already include many activities in their fee. With a nanny if children did any classes such as music, gymnastics, then those would cost extra. Look at costs of things your children may do, think about what you spend on your children. If you tend not to spend much and are creative with free activities, then you need to find a nanny who is like you and won't spend too much.

Do you use weekly/monthly bus passes - that may be a way to keep costs down but still letting nanny take children out.
