Extra pay for extra child?

I currently look after a 2 year old, and in a few weeks I'll also be looking after her baby brother.

My question is, should I ask for extra pay, as my work load will increase, won't be able to do usual activities due to having two, and due to their different routines and sleeping times, I'll no longer be having a break.

How to approach? Or am I silly into thinking I should get extra?

Grin thats coz we all seem to be of the same opinion that a nanny should be able to cope with 2 children of these ages, and be able to cope with doing activites with both of them

but agree tis rare for all of us to agree :)

I just wandered what about the activities you are concerned about? I understand swimming, and I think most places wouldn't allow two children under 5 to one adult (my insurance certainly doesn't) but the other classes will just require planning. Surely your 7yr experience will tell you that?

I'm not sure what your wage is now, are you happy to disclose?, so it's hard to say whether you should be paid more. If you are in west London, I would assume it's a healthy wage!

really?? i have often taken 2 under 5 swimming, our local pool wont allow 3 under 8 but 2 is fine :)

ACM88 · 05/08/2014 19:45

Yes blondes- I was turned away just last Friday, and when I checked my insurance it said one only under three, we went to paddling pool instead!

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/08/2014 19:58

wont allow 2 under 1, ie twins

how strange diff pools have diff rules :)

Unexpected · 05/08/2014 20:04

Just checked our local pool rules. It generally seems to be that anyone under 4 has to have 1-2-1 supervision. Because there are different pools, there are a bewildering range of ratios and also lessons have different rules but 1-2-1 for under 4s is generally how it averages out.

It does vary at different pools, council rules etc.. Agree with most others opinion it is the family not number of children - so may or may not have pay increase , it could be an opportunity to have a chat about how things are going to be with two and see if salary is discussed then. Will the 2 year old be going to nursery for a few sessions in the next few months/ near future ? as I usually find it is good then to do something with the baby such as a swimming / playgroup/music. The second baby always easier in many ways and is quite happy going places with older sibling and watching. I had 3 under 4 and always had them ALL sleeping at the same time in the afternoon ! So could have some down time before round 2 started .. Loved that job though as never a dull moment or time to feel isolated . I personally don't like looking after one child long term ..

Pools certainly do have different rules. They also have different facilities. I love one of our local pools for when I have a baby in my care as they have a babyseat in each family changing room. They have quite a lot of family sized changing rooms, so makes getting everyone changed easier.

You adapt to what there is though, we have another pool which is much warmer but no babyseat, only a communal changing room. It is fine though, bit of a pain to change a nappy but you adapt and remember to bring a rollup changing mat.

ACM88 - which insurer? Bit worrying if they are starting to put in limits like that in PL insurance.

ACM88 · 05/08/2014 22:01

Pacey- to be honest I can see why and I don't think I would take two of my youngest swimming in a big pool at the same time...paddling pool, or older children is different!

OP
An inflatable floating seat for baby can be really helpful for swimming.

grobagsforever · 06/08/2014 21:22

Four hourly feeds!! Blondes do you want to come and explain that to DD? Hourly in day unless asleep. .

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/08/2014 22:17

Your bubs is only young grobags - congrats btw :) hope all is going well apart from feeds but I would advise getting Into 2 then 3 then 4hrly feddi?g - to give you a rest if nothing else

Would you like me to send you a routine? And anything you want to ask /know let me know x

I've taken 2 under fives swimming in the past but I can see it might be a bit daunting for some. As to other activities I cant see what the problem is.

when asked about nanny salary being higher than other forms of childcare I've always pointed out that we are paid the same if we have 1 or 6 childrenGrin where other forms of childcare charge per child"

If your pay is low then ask for a pay rise but don't bring the extra child into it just say that you have looked into the rate in your area and you feel you deserve a pay rise.
