CM are self-employed, and set their own rates and contracts of work. Some don't charge at all when they're not available (eg, when on holiday) but will have a higher hourly rate to cover this; others will charge, usually a portion of their daily rate. (This can help parents ensure continuity of care, and continuity of costs, while also helping the Cm to have a regular income.)

If you're looking at "just holiday" cover, for a Cm to look after your dc during the school holidays (it's really not clear from your post) you'll be paying in the region of £40/£50, even £60 pd, per child, I'd think. You might get a sibling discount if you're lucky, but an 11 hour working day, with no breaks, is a loooong day, and needs to be properly remunerated.

And, er, haven't you left it a bit late?

Get a list from you local authority family information service to see other CM rates. Also look up prices of holiday clubs and nurseries. Holiday clubs near me only charge about £25 per day, and massively undercut CMs. So there's hardly any holiday business.

Yes I have looked at holiday clubs which like you said charge 23 including breakfast but they don't run until 7pm which is what would be ideal for the parents. I get the impression also that they want to mix the holiday club and childminding, in which case I think I will give them an hourly rate and a daily rate. Are the daily rate as muchas stated from the old lady?

Rates vary from area to area. People within a 5 mile radius of me charge between £3.50-£6.00. It's all about whether there's a demand in your area and what you are offering.
