Childcare for 1-2hrs per wk!!

Too ridiculous?
DS will be in before and after school club for 3 days per wk when I go back to work in sept.
I've managed to get him a place in a lovely one very close to school and to our house.
The problem is it finishes at 5.45 which will be fine for 2 days but on Mondays I finish at 6 and often have to stay later so will need something to cover until probably 7.
Ideally I need someone to pick him up and then look after him, possibly at our house, until I get home.....
Has anyone had childcare for such a small amount of time? Where would I even start looking?

Sounds like a job for a local teenager to me. Or someone else's au pair. Word of mouth often best for this - do you know anyone with older children? If not then advertise in local newsletter, secondary school etc - then interview and follow up references rigorously.

Local teenager or student?

Lucylouby · 03/07/2014 12:59

Local teenager. I don't think a childminder would want to do this for just a short time at tea time. Or would one of the staff at the after school club be willing to do it as a bit of extra babysitting work? Not sure if that would work, but maybe worth approaching to find out.

Or a retired neighbour. If they insist they don't want to be paid (but don't realise how awkward that would get), frame it as earning monet for their favourite charity.

Could you use a childminder on Mondays instead of the after school club? Lots of childminders work until 7pm, but they would most likely want to have him the whole afternoon rather than just the last hour, to avoid an extra trip out.

Obviously can't speak for all CM, but I wouldn't do this, not just because it's only two hours, but because it's awkward timings with dinner and pick up for other children at 6pm...maybe babysitter? With promise of extra hrs?

Thanks all. Am quite new to the area so don't know many people that well but will try the parents at work to see if any have a teenager I could ask.

Ask at the after school club if any of staff would be interested. Then you have continuity.

I wouldn't bother with the afterschool club that day, just get and after school care from 3.30 til you get home. That way you can get their reading book done, they can go to a club if they want and they get a bit of down time at home.
Its likely that then you can fit in with another afterschool nanny who looks after children other days.
