Advice for making nanny redundant

This is a tricky one. Nanny on maternity leave, have hired a childminder in the interim.

My eldest child goes to secondary school as of September, it has become apparent that I no longer need a nanny. My job has changed so the arrangement that I have now is working out fine as I no longer need the day cover during school hols.

How would I go about making the nanny redundant? And when do I do it? I obviously want to do everything by the book.

Get advice from ACAS. They have a guide Managing Redundancy for pregnant employees or those on maternity leave. They have a helpline, so read the guide and call for help.

"A woman made redundant while on maternity leave must be offered
any suitable alternative vacancy if you have one. She doesn’t need
to apply for it."

Is a childminder going to be your new childcare solution? So this would make the position of childcare at your home redundant. There is no alternative job to offer, unless you are still thinking about options - thus a part-time position at your home may be available.

One thing to ask ACAS is what happen if:
You use a childminder but it does not work out, so then decide to get someone to work as a nanny at your home - do you have to offer that job to the nanny you made redundant? If so, is there a time period when that is no longer the case, such as in a years time?

You CAN make someone on maternity leave redundant. You MUST follow the correct procedure. So talk to ACAS about what the procedure is that you need to follow, given that you have ONE employee.

Yes, I would second advice to call ACAS. This is what I did when we made our nanny redundant in the same circumstances as you. They were really helpful and clear, and it was good to know I was paying the 'right' amount, as I was getting lost trying to figure it out myself!
