how much does your childminder/nursery cost ?

i think i'm pregnant and i'm starting a new job in 4 weeks ill be earning £800-900 per month working 10 hour and 12 hour shifts 4 days a week and OH earns the same working full time i'd like to be able to go back to work after maternity leave ( how long is this ?) and im not sure of the costs or weather it would be worth it. could you also post your region as costs differ nationwide :) TIA

Bristol, childminder is about £4.50-£5 an hour, nursery £5-£6.

Maternity leave - you can take up to 9 months paid at £135 a week, plus another 3 months unpaid.

40-48 hours a week for £800-£900 a month? Isn't that less than minimum wage?

is it minimum wage at £5.03 an hour i just looked at childminders in my area and its £600 a month Shock which leaves me and OH with £200 from me for bills etc and OH £800-900 and i don't get to spend time with the baby Hmm think if i do get a positive Pg Test i'll quit at 8 months pregnant i heard the government is bringing in free childcare not sure what the guidelines are of it or who can claim but i think they do need to do something about childcare to get more on benefits sit around all day is a disgrace people should be rewarded for doing right by their child not demoted to a lower class of lifestyle and left to struggle Sad

Are you going to turn 21 soon? It makes a difference to your income.

Also, you can look into what you can claim to support you - tax credits, childcare vouchers etc. If your income is low, you can get help with costs, it's not purely a work / don't work choice.

im 21 at the end of the year i know all the rates and everything its just the childcare rates i was baffled with it sounds utterly mean and i hate thinking it but i hope i get a BFN when we started TTC 9 months ago i wasn't planning been handed a job so easily and we are buying a house this month and i wanted to save at least 2 yrs salary to ration out until baby was old enough for nursery so we didn't have to struggle Sad feeling utterly rotten for thinking that we will manage within our means on OH wages but i wanted to take some of the weight off and live frivolously for a few months then start squirreling away what happens happens can't believe i got offered a job out of the blue though i didn't even see it coming or apply for it Shock

Child tax credits will pay up to 70% of childcare costs dependant on your income - you can find a calculator on www.gov.uk

Why would you quit at 8 months pregnant? Surely claim your maternity leave first?

From the dates you have given, you won't be entitled to statutory maternity pay from your new employer as you have to have 26 weeks if continuous service by about the 26th week if your pregnancy which you won't have if you start in 4 weeks

They may have a contractual policy which pays out but that is very unlikely as you usually have had to be there for a certain amount if time decided by the employer to qualify

You may be entitled to maternity allowance though so worth looking into that

well I've only just got the job and it would be a bit cheeky and inconsiderate to my employer if i demanded maternity leave and pay when i know i wouldn't be going back Hmm

OH actually earns 1,250 a month now i just checked so i don't think we would be eligible for tax credits i'll be on just under 10K a year i think its better if i was to quit after 8 months use the money from all my wages to prepare for baby nicely and then SAHP for 2 years i cant wait for the 10th to do a PG test so much uncertainty at the moment regarding this and its driving me nuts i'm very organised and this has hit me like a brick out of nowhere OH is just saying what will be will be and calmly carrying on as usual HOW DO MEN DO THAT ?? Hmm
