We're advertising for an after school nanny, we're offering what I think is a fair rate (£200 pw gross for 15 hours) and I've had four people in a row apply for the job, come to interviews, come back for second interviews and then say the money isn't enough. They knew what the money was before they applied, why bother going through the whole process if they know they want more?

Maybe they're being polite and it's not the real reason?

cheminotte · 27/06/2014 21:19

Maybe they have to go for interviews to keep benefits? We had an applicant for approx 15 hour a week job term time only who was lovely but she couldn't take it as she needed 16 hours to get tax credits or similar.

God I hadn't thought of that Emily... maybe we're awful and they're too polite to tell us :(

Cheminotte, perhaps I should make it 16 hours a week? But to be honest I'd rather they spoke up if that was the case, I'd be happy to build an extra hour in to the week somewhere.

I would say the money is not the problem. I do after school work/school hols and get £9 net a hour which works out less than the £13 gross a hour you are offering. I do do more hours a week though over a year average works out as 26. a week, so it may not be the money that isn't enough as for those hours I would say it is, it is more that the number of hours a week isn't enough and they wouldn't be able to find another job to fit with it. Could you add a few hours by adding nursery duties to the start of the working day so a couple of hours for children's washing ironing, food prep etc?

IME the money isn't the main thing when looking for a nanny job. If everything else seems great but the money is a bit low then I would take it as I would know a pay rise may come at some point and being happy in the job is more important than an extra £20 a week which goes nowhere really.

Ouchy
dont take it personal. This is very common problem when you are offering a part time job. It happens to all employers i.e shops , offices etc. People need to pay bills and will apply to any job. Then if something with more h hours comes they will simply might takd that one if the maths for the bills are better. Right now life is hard for many people and we are all forced imo to become more pragmatic.
I dont think that it is personal and you are awful.

As others have said don't take it personally! It's a good wage, but not necessarily the easiest to find a second job to fill the hours. Perhaps going through an agency would prove more successful?
