Would you use a CM with a Rottweiler?

I'm thinking of a career change and would love to be a CM.

My issues are that I don't have a 'play room', I'd just be using the front room but that's what my CM does so no worries there really.

My other is that my pooch is a rottie. He's very small for a rott and he's very very lovely. Mostly, I'd probably keep them separated anyway but I know some people hear Rottweiler and run a mile.

Would something this trivial put people off? Most CMs have dogs from what I see...

Christ, no! A Rottweiler? Are you serious?????

bakingaddict · 26/06/2014 18:50

How many incidents of babies and toddlers being mauled to death by guinea pigs and hamsters has there been lately noblooming

McBear · 26/06/2014 19:01

Why would I not be Juneau? Your response is similar to if I'd said alligator.

He's just a dog. A lazy smelly dog. He's used to lots of people and lots of kids. He generally just lies there watching. If he ever has enough of the disturbance, he saunters off. No harm, no foul. Larger dogs have much better temperaments than little dogs.

I didn't think it would be that big if a deal purely because during my three searches for CM, I have never come across one without a family dog. It goes without saying that you never leave them alone together. I'd keep them separate anyway.

No way. Not even if it was kept separate. And supervised contact does not prevent a dog snapping. I love dogs but would be terrified of leaving any age dc with one. Sorry.

Never.

bakingaddict · 26/06/2014 19:09

Go for it McBear....I don't think anybody here including myself who says they would never leave a child with a CM with a dog like yours is going to dissuade you. The proof will be in how long it takes you to fill your childminding places, do please report back to us doubters if we are proven most wrong

McBear · 26/06/2014 19:10

Dogs don't have packs. They are not wolves. Behaviourists (well trained ones at least) don't use dominance and pack mentality to train dogs anymore.

Iflyaway · 26/06/2014 19:11

No. No way.

BackforGood · 26/06/2014 19:13

I have to say I don't think your sample of CMs is very typical - not just comparing with the 6 I've used over the years (none of whom had dogs) but the dozens and dozens I've known through my work. It's just no a good mix to have a dog in the same house as an unpredictable group of small children.

bigTillyMint · 26/06/2014 19:13

No. Not in a million years. But maybe others would feel more confident.

Your comment about him being smelly isn't selling him to me either.

Purplehonesty · 26/06/2014 19:16

McBear; they are outside in our garden if the kids are indoors, in the kennel if the kids are out.
They go for walk when we go for walks and then yes they wander in the fields. The fields are ours though and they can't get anywhere else due to it being fenced and them being too old/lazy to jump out.

McBear · 26/06/2014 19:16

Yes sorry bigtilly but he can really smellBlush

I can't tell you how many profiles I've looked at on Childcare.co.uk and have met with far too many. Honestly, all had dogs.

No!

McBear · 26/06/2014 19:17

I see purple, I thought you were just letting them out for a play in the farmers/public fields. Makes sense now. not jealous of you having own fields at all

Ive owned two rotties. I wouldn't use a cm with a rottie or labrador or shi tzu unless they kept the dog separate and tbh I think that is unfair on the dog.

Op what about when you have yo cook in the kitchen and need to bring the mindees with you, or if they are doing messy play or baking/paintinf? Where will the dog go?

Also, does your dog toilet in the garden where the dcs would be playing?

McBear · 26/06/2014 19:26

I'd have to move him from the lichen to the living room and the kids would sit in the dining area section. Generally he's in the hall way in front of the door so would still be separate.

He has a special section that he's allowed to poo in and kids can't play in.

I hope no one thinks I don't appreciate all their replies. I was expecting a no tbh but not to them being separated. I am shocked.

Def not. I would never forgive myself if something happened.

STOPwiththehahaheheloling · 26/06/2014 19:36

They wouldnt really be sufficiently separated in the scenario you describe though OP- it would involve the dog having to pass the children or the children pass the dog for you to get children from living room to kitchen and vice versa, also children do random things like walking into the hall when you take something out to the bin. Would they have to walk through the hall to use the toilet? Tbh with several dcs in the house you will all be in and out of each room like yoyos all day, shifting the dog each time will be a nightmare ad i can see it lapsing TBH and you forgetting or deciding it's only for a second while you run to the loo or the front door etc. unless you had a completely separate room to put him in that dcs just would never have access to or through it just wont work.

Purplehonesty · 26/06/2014 19:36

yeah I don't let them roam, they have no road sense either and would get run over!
I wouldn't want my kids to be looked after by anyone with a big dog who lived in the house. Not just a rottie.
I don't like dog hair and dog slobber being where the kids play and I wouldn't like to take the chance that they might get trodden on and bite.
I love our dogs but I love my kids more which is why they aren't allowed to mix when I am not there. I just won't take the chance that dd will pull too hard on their ears and who knows. They have a lot of teeth and I can't watch the kids 24/7. I sometimes have to go to the loo!
When I'm not working (3 days a week) the dogs play with my kids in the garden or come with us on outings but they never come in the house. It's all open plan downstairs so there is nowhere to separate them from each other.
It is a shame for the dogs I know that. We had them before the kids and they lived in our old house. But to be honest when I try to get them to come indoors at night they don't want to. They are having a nice time playing and snoozing outside. Or I hope that's the case.

SunflowerStalks · 26/06/2014 19:38

Absolutely not. I would happily use a cm with a dog, but it would depend on the breed. Rotties are on my NO list.

I know 2 (usually) beautifully behaved rotties who bit through a friends leather jacket!

ProtegeMoi · 26/06/2014 19:38

As a rottie owner myself I would but many won't as they sadly have a bad rep and many people are too naive to actually check bite statistics and realise they are WAY more likely to be bitten by a collie, lab or terrier than a rottie.

Purplehonesty · 26/06/2014 19:38

Is your garden/garage big enough for a kennel Mcbear?
That might solve your problem.

I know lots of cm with dogs, both my best friends in fact. It doesn't seem to
Worry their customers so maybe it is more of a country thing here - people used to dogs, I'm not sure.
