I have cared for just after school children for the past 3 years so the following is what we have got up to.
I like to have a planned craft every afternoon for the after school children usually with a theme. Sometimes in the past I have found thay sometimes they have not been interested in a particular craft so I now involve them in a lot of the planning , asking them what they would like to make/do.
I keep a supply of hamma beads, shrink plastic art, paper marche, paint your own kits. Air hardening clay/fimo.Beads for jewellery making. Card making (I have a little veg trolley that I pull out of the cupboard ,full of card making bits, so the children can help themselves.
French knitting was a hit here last year
I have a selection of board games, chess at one point was a huge hit (they had been learning it in school) . Top trumps card games was another hit a while back. Lego, knex (Im very lucky my own children have passed these onto me )oh and jenga. Some nights the children would design their own board games.
Sometimes they just want to play, at the moment I have 2 aged 5 & 6 and they really enjoy dens/shopping and dressing up. Sometimes we get the tent/market stand out or I will drape a sheet over the dining room table
I have had some children who just want to sit and relax with a book after school.
On the toy rack they can help themselves to paper, pencils, word searches, dot to dot etc and have a folder each to keep their word searches, colourings etc in until they finish them or want to take them home.
Depending on how much time we have after school, we sometimes go for a walk or pop to the library.
Have fun
