A friend of mine is as far as i can see a Nanny she cares for a family in their home, which she has being doing for the last 9 years. Ofsead have recently contacted her to say they are going to do a visit so she needs to get everything in order, she has always been registered with ofstead but never had a visit so as you can imagine she is a little nervous to say the least,, She has just asked me who i have my insurance with ( Morton and Micheal) so when i check for her they have different cover for Childminders to a nanny, Ofstead have registered her as a home care provider / childminder! Any advice please??

If she is registered with ofsted so her employers can pay her using childcare vouchers then yes they will inspect her at some point (no where near as reg as a childminder or as in depth) they basically just check her first aid and insurance certificates and ask a few questions about safe guarding children in her care and maybe if she has a first aid kit or knows where the family one is.

It really isn't to worry about all very painless.

Thanks i understand that but the question really is is she a nanny or a childminder?? the insurance cost is different she just wants to be sure

My understanding is that if she looks after children in her own home she is a CM, if she looks after them in their home she is a nanny.

That is what I thought, I've advised her to check with ofstead

She is a nanny. Insurance wise and Ofsted wise it is called Home Childcarer. Within that is a type of Childminder.

The policy from MortonMichel will be the one costing around £70 before discounts. Liability amount is 3million I think. That will be fine. Ofsted may want to see insurance from several years, gather together the insurance certificates (print them out if as PDFs).

Is she trying to buy the insurance now? Ofsted are likely to spot that the dates do not match, though I suppose there is a hope they don't spot it or ask to see the previous years insurance documents.

If it helps, this is the product page on MMs website

i have been a nanny to a child with SEN for the last 12 years and i have been ofsted checked as well, they just ask you a few questions, your nanny insurance and ofsted registration is all on the main computer system so you don't need that paper work just your first aid certificate, basically they are checking that the parents are not claiming for childcare vouchers and not using them correctly and also that the children are happy, the child i look after is now 17 but mentally only 8 years old, her parents cannot claim childcare vouchers from 16 plus and complain about the cost of childcare but their daughter is not mentally able to be left on her own for longer than half an hour, she is scared of thunder, lightening, the dark, loud noises and her own shadow, i can see her being at least 18-20 years old before she would be able to be left unsupervised for any longer period of time!

inspection 2013.pdf This may be useful. As far as I know only First Aid is verified by OFSTED. Insurance and qualifications is a box to tick, there is no central insurance database so no way OFSTED would know.

It's a good idea for every registered nanny to have an inspection ready folder with all the documents in. The guide I linked to has a checklist and picks out the things which are relevant to nannies, so no need for written policies etc.

inspection 2013.pdf link that works, hopefully!
