Fair rate of pay for assistant covering CM holiday

Our lovely CM is on holiday in August and the assistant who she works with is covering 3 days for us (basically nannying at our house). I asked her what her rate would be and she suggested £50/day as that's what we pay the childminder. As it's a 10 hour day I said I would pay her more because that's not even minimum wage - it's not the same for the childminder as obviously she has other children in her care so her hourly rate is effectively higher iyswim.

So obviously we'll pay at least minimum wage. She then suggested £70/day which seems ok to me - do you think that's reasonable or still not enough? She's lovely and I want to be fair. We're in SE London.

Yes I'm in NE London- that sounds right to me!

So you'd pay an assistant more than you pay your actual childminder...? I'm shocked

TheScience · 15/05/2014 22:47

You pay a nanny more than a childminder Dukketeater, as the job is different, just like you pay a nanny more than you pay a nursery.

Dukketeater, it is annoying that the assistant gets paid more than the childminder, but it is a different job. I also get annoyed that a teenage babysitter gets paid more per hour for looking after a sleeping child in the evening than I get for looking after the same child all day, entertaining them, providing activities and educating them and everything else that goes with being a childminder (I'm registered and qualified). But it's the way it is. I try my very best not to think about it.

I'd pay my childminder more tbh but that's the rate she set and we haven't been with her long. I will probably just give her a nice annual bonus Smile

But as others have said, for this period the assistant is doing a different job, essentially nannying for us, and that tends to attract a different rate (and generally a higher one than £7ph!). And in any case the CM must be paying her at least minimum wage so the CM is clearly ok with that!

Anyway thanks for the advice, especially AMI88
