Are Nanny shares usually self employed?

I've started to advertise for our first nanny. It's a part time post and I'm expecting the job to appeal either to a nanny with their own child or someone who wants a nanny share.

If a nanny is working for two families do they usually do it as self employed or can I still go through someone like nannytax as I don't want to be coordinating the other families payments and hours etc. Thanks for any info.

No, you and the other family would both be employers.
Probably best to talk to a nanny payroll company as they will be used to the complexities of a share.
If it is a NWOC rather than a share, then you would be the employer in your own right.

If you do not want to coordinate hours, pay, holiday with another family, then do not do a nanny share.

A nanny share is when a nanny cares for children from two families At The Same Time. Where a nanny has one job Mon-Wed and another job Thur-Fri that in my view is not a nanny share, it is two employments and you do not need to know the other family.

Thismay be a useful read with regard to how tax is done with a share vs two jobs.

Key thing to do is to agree a Gross salary.

I think you've misunderstood what a nanny share is. A nanny share would mean she would be looking after someone elses children at the same time as she looks after yours. Regardless of employment status, that would obviously involve you dealing with the other family.

I'll have a look at the links too. Thank you. I was thinking it could possibly end up as a nanny share because we don't want the same days every week which I understand is probably not ideal for the nanny So I wouldn't mind if they wanted to pick up more hours with another family, and eg everytime she worked a Monday or Tuesday for us, then we would be sharing those days with another family. I don't mind dealing with other families and arrangements, I was just thinking the payment side would be complex.

It is complex but if you both use the same payroll agency it becomes simpler.

You may find a NWOC is preferable as then you don't have to worry about another family on your days.

PlinkyPlonker · 25/04/2014 12:40

Yes now I've read the link - it's way more complex than I was thinking it would be! you are probably right Nom, a NWOC might be the easiest solution. Although at least I now know there are payroll options for any future nanny shares.

Sounds like it could get very complex if a share as could vary a lot. NWOC sounds like it is worth considering.

It may be hard to find someone but it may appeal to someone local. Try not to be too restrictive in terms of whom you would consider. Think about local places to advertise, people to ask as you may find it appeals to someone you already know or a friend of a friend.
