My c/m doesn't normally work Bank Holidays (though sometimes on the more 'random' ones - you know the ones in May which are not attached to main holidays like Christmas and Easter - she has asked me if I needed her, as she'd have been prepared to help me out in an emergency, but I see this as her kindness rather than a duty). I pay her half on Bank Holidays. It's tough if you have to work, though. Is there no-one else who can have your kids? My dh works Bank Holidays and weekends, but luckily I don't, so we're OK. All this should be in your contract.

Twiglett · 23/08/2006 12:46

yes totally normal

and no you don't pay when she's not available to work

prettybird · 23/08/2006 13:05

I had to pay my childminder for bank holidays. But as there were three of them that ran it, I also never had to pay when she went on holiday.

The only days "off" I got were the "staff weekend" (when she had a long weekend away with her mum and MIL, with whom she did the childminding, and her sister) and the fortnight over Christmans when she was also shut.

Earthymama · 23/08/2006 13:09

Sorry Twiglett I have to disagree, I am paid on Bank Holidays as normal if child should be here. Perhaps because all my parent/carers have BH off with full pay they agree to this when we sign the contract.

Holidays and days off are one of the first things I mention to get things stright before we start!!

N&T, did you not realise this before you started with your childminder? Perhaps you could come to an arrangement if CM has nothing planned for that day.
(Trawled through some CM sites and this seems to be the norm)

EvesMama · 23/08/2006 13:11

i have found(while setting my t&c up) that its the norm to be paid bank hols and not work them, and then charge double time or more if you are asked to work.
i had to pay for my dd when she went to private nursery and they were shut b.hol mondays, but then they would normally fit her in another day so we didnt miss out

alibubbles · 23/08/2006 14:02

If a bank holiday falls on a contracted day, a c/m would expect to be paid for it, even though she wouldn't work it. If required to work, then most would charge as higher fee.

It should be clearly stated in your contract.

EvesMama · 23/08/2006 14:20

yes, one of the most important things in contrAct, it will be there

nicm · 23/08/2006 17:42

yes i charge full pay for bank holidays and double if the child is here. i should also be charging a late collection fee, as i'm supposed to finish at half 5 and i'm still sitting waiting with no phone call or anything!! aaagh

boo70 · 23/08/2006 17:48

yes i charge full pay for bank holidays as stated in my contract too.

bonkerz · 23/08/2006 18:06

I charge full price for bank holidays and dont work them although i do offer to work them for an extra £10 added on to my normal fee. Bank holidays are the only PAID holiday i get!

mum2akebk · 24/08/2006 05:33

Hi I do get paid for Bank Holidays and would work them if needed. However, if I worked a Bank Holiday I would charge double time. Have just signed contracts with a new parent and she is fine with this.

same as YG.
we pay for bank holidays and holidays too. To be honest it seems only fair to me, it is a job like any other why shouldn't they get paid? we get it at our jobs...
only thing she does not get is sick pay, and yet...

anyway they (it's husband and wife doing it) are brilliant. DD loves them and that's really priceless.

Cannot be stingy with who takes care of the most precious thing in your life, can you?

jozefkira · 24/08/2006 08:07

Hi, same for me and other minders I know , we all charge for bank holidays if normally a contracted day. Its agreed in the contract before and my 3 weeks paid holiday but thats another thread!

Earthymama · 24/08/2006 12:18

N&T, have you checked your contract? hope you aren't feeling as put out now, it's not nice if things aren't clear11

franyfroo · 24/08/2006 13:54

i never work bank holidays but i get paid for them (no other hols are paid for) if they want me to work i charge double time........hence, they never ask me to work! its all in my prospectus and in their contracts.

lynie · 24/08/2006 14:32

I never work bank hols and I don't charge as I'm not available.I keep it simple If I'm available you pay if not you don't.

nzshar · 24/08/2006 17:15

I dont charge for bank holidays either. I decided this because i really really dont want to work on those days. So rather than feeling like i may be asked to work a bank holiday i just dont charge and therefore it is on my terms.
