Nanny contract: normal notice period? and Holiday allowance

Just about to become an employed nanny for the first time, as opposed to a Self Employed Maternity Nurse.

Could people please tell me the norm for notice period. I was thinking 4 weeks, but potential employer says 3 months.

Also I work Monday-Thursday (but only three whole days) so I get 16.8 days holiday INC Bank Holidays. How do we write this into the contract? I am happy to work the bank holidays that fall on Monday, will I then work them and get a days paid holiday at another time? And with regards to the bank holidays which fall on days I do not normally work, do I have to take those as paid holiday?

Probation: 1 week notice
After probation: varies, 1 month is probably typical though can be longer. A terms notice perhaps in a termtime role.

Holidays calculate in hours if you do different hours different days.
Minimum holiday 5.6 x hours per week.
Bank holidays not worked which fall on a working day would be taken as annual leave at the number of hours for that day.

Four weeks' notice is common but many employers seem to be asking for longer to give them time to recruit if you leave. it protects you too if they dismiss you as long as it is three months each.

Holiday, I would pro rate the bank holidays. Then you need to use that pro rated bank holiday allowance to cover bank holidays on working days. Any balance can be used as normal holiday. As I didn't work bank holidays I wouldn't want my nanny working them and then having extra holiday that I had to cover at other times.

I tend to put 6 weeks in a contract as lots of nannies have to give a month's notice, so you need the extra 10 days to recruit.

I would again just put 17 days in the contract, then if you want to book bank holidays off you can and if they want you to work them you can. Otherwise it just gets complicated if bank holidays fall on a different day each year. Its usual for you to choose half your holiday and the employer half.

I would absolutely never agree to have my nanny turning up on a bank holiday when I am off and relaxing with my family, only to cover her holiday on another day. Crazy!
