Expenses for tax returns

Just about to finish and send off my tax returns for the financial year!

Just wondering which section I put first aid, training courses etc under. Is that other allowable expenses?

Also if you have time to post: what do you all claim for in brief…? So I can do a double check. First year so all daunting! Good at maths and book keeping though so haven't used an accountant!

thanks!

Hello OP, not sure but bumping for you as there are several accountants I know of on here, who will be glad to help.

HMRC Childminders Tax 2012/13 pdf - not the latest version but this should help.

PACEY Factsheet on Expenses and Allowances 2009 - bit dated but again should prove useful.

HMRC BIM52751 - info from HMRC on Childminder Expenses.

I do the short version of the tax return, where you fill in all of your expenses as a single figure rather than separating them out into different types. It is so much easier Smile

If annual turnover was less than £77,000 then you can put the total expenses in box 19 on the self-employment (short) tax return.
You need to keep detailed records of expenses so they can be checked if HMRC decide to do so.

See notes in document sa103s-notes.

Off the top of my head I claim for:

All food (60p for snack/breakfast, £1.75 lunch & £2.25 dinner) or receipts for food & drinks if we eat out
Fees for groups we attend inc mileage/parking
Mileage & parking to free activities (park/woods etc)
Wipes & nappy sacks
50% of household cleaning products, toilet/kitchen rolls plus things like cling film & foil
Any resources (toys, craft bits, plus cm stationery like daily diary, folders for art work etc) inc any mileage to purchase
Ink & paper for printer
Annual CM memberships, Ofsted fee, PL insurance etc
% of gas, electric, water & c/tax
10% wear & tear

I've never claimed for (but often wonder whether I can/should!) % of telephone calls/rental & broadband, home & car insurance.
