Already posted this in chat but thought I would here as well.
DD (15) is beginning this course after school on Monday. Does anyone know what you actually do it it and if it is useful? Apparently you do first aid etc. Would you be more likely to hire a teenager to babysit if they had done this course?

Also how can she find work? Lots of websites say get references but she's never done it before. And how much would you pay a first time babysitter 15 year old per hour? Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks :)

What course?

nannynick · 26/01/2014 19:52

Red Cross babysitting course perhaps?

Basically i have hired teenagers to babysit my ds since he was about 5, but before that I preferred to hire adults. Given the choice between 2 teenagers I would pick the one who had done a first aid course, but I wouldn't necessarily go looking for this. I pay £5 an hour.

I only hire teenagers who are children of local friends of mine - because then I know that their parents are within screaming distance. But I've seen postcards up at the local community centre which I would consider at a pinch - try that or a place of worship - IMO not the local shop, unless you live in a village.

yes the British Red Cross course - that was meant
to be the thread title but something went wrong..

My DD did something like that and people hired her. Going rate is £4 an hour but you need to be on hand in case of something serious happening before the parents can get home.

I've heard of friends teenagers getting £8-10 per hour which I was v taken aback at. £5 per hr to sit, eat snacks and watch tv is adequate imo, different if the kids are actively up requiring entertainment/care.

If I had to choose between two inexperienced 15yr olds, I would definitely go with the teen who had done this course
