Hi I used to be an assistant childminder with someone else. I no longer do this and now look after two children in their own home, can anyone tell me what this is classed as? as I am not allowed to register as a childminder due to me not living there, nor a nanny as I am self employed and they dont employ me.

I would be grateful for any help at all x

something like an au pair i guess

Careful tho' unless you work for anyone else I think the IR will count you as an employee not as SE

Why do you think that you are self-employed? Nannies can be self-employed, but it is not common.

If you only work for that family, then you are an Employee.

If you work occasionally for that family, and do other work for other families, then you may get HMRC to agree that you are self-employed, though I consider it unlikely, as I do not feel you are able to replace yourself with someone you employ.

Try using the Employment Status Indicator and see what it says.

As you seem to think that you are currently of self employed status, 0845 9154655 Self Employed Contact Centre may be your first point of call, though you may get a faster response if you call your local tax office and ask to speak with the Status Officer.
