I got a letter from the local CIS with a form half filled for me saying I must register as a "food business" with environmental health and be inspected.
What does anyone know about this,
and what is the inspection like?

Not heard of this one for childminders but my playgroup was inspected last week. Not much to it just needed to send for a pack thing that came in a big folder to keep at the group.

Have only been on the other end of this (did Basic Food Hygiene cert to work in a setting like yours), but it was mostly common-sense stuff - different chopping boards and utensils for raw meat, veg, and cooked food; proper handwashing; seperate hand towel and teatowel; proper use of fridge (ie no raw meat dripping onto other stuff) etc etc.

Letter mentions a change in the law and says I must do it by 31st August
Anyone else know anything?

ring your local environmental health - they're normally very nice!

When I rang my early years department I was told the instruction came from OFSTED so it looks like all childminders are going to have to register.

More beaurocracy

What joy

Another reason that i will be glad to give up for.

alison222 · 21/07/2006 12:44

Are you definately giving up then?

This is getting silly. What happened to 'home from home' childcare??? We're not bloody nurseries.

If they keep bringing out new things like this I will seriously think about quiting myself!!

alison222 · 21/07/2006 12:52

I am told its a one off registration and visit. But how long before they change the rules again.
Oh and the early years letter said you must register by 31st Aug (new rules come into force 1st Sept) but we will send you the new training programme including food hygine courses in Sept - no courses over the summer of course!!!!

Sorry I just need to have a good old moan about it

moan away, all this stuff is really starting to annoy me and all my parents too actually!

so, if i haven't had a letter, will i still need to do it by a certain date then???

alison222 · 21/07/2006 13:02

Don't know how its working. When I rang to query the whys and wherefores of it the head of the Early years told me they had been contacted by OFSTED saying it was a requirement for all childminders to register - cant imagine they only picked one council - and she checked with environmental health who said yes we did all have to register.

There was an article in Who Minds- summer issue saying they were still seeking clarification on how childminders should comply with the new regs and if anyone was asked to register to contact NCMA so I did and am waiting from a reply from a regional head or something but the tone of the article was more - waiting for CLARIFICATION on how to comply - not that childminders wuld be exempt so It looks like we are all in for yet more hassles.

I just want to know if anyone knows what the inspection is like?
I haven't done a food hygine course though I imagine most is common sense anyway
Just wondering if there are any bizarre things I haven't thought of that they will look for
