Childminder's Club:Do you worry about looking after other people's children in the heatwave?

I really have concerns about their health and safety

I worry that I'm not careful enough (I keep them out of the sun - give plenty of water) but I just worry

It's going to be maybe 36 on Wednesday - is it safe?

I'm probably panicing - what do you all think?

I worry about mindees in this heat, however my afterschoolies would rather stay in when they get in from school(our garden does get very, very hot and is shaded with several trees, it does however seem to keep the heat-we had a temperature of 42 at the weekend)

My other mindees who are with me during the day are kept inside from 11am untill the afterschool pickup is done. I provide plenty of drinks and loads of "watery" fruit like melon, grapes etc.

I also tend to keep the curtains/blinds shut with the windows open and use fans (ceiling and free standing).

If we do have to go out I seek lots of shade, plenty of sunblock and drinks.

nzshar · 17/07/2006 23:06

I have the opposite i have the blonde and very fair ds my mindee is dark haired and olive skinned. I dont go outside between 11 and 4 and water water water

Katymac · 17/07/2006 23:08

We have such a duty of care to them

It just seems so scary - this country (& us) just don't have the skills to deal with this sort of weather

perhaps its just me then ....i hate the hot weather but grew up with similar heat (New Zealand) every summer. I make sure that i have the hats that have the backflap for ds and also that sunblock is used very regularly.

Catch you all tomorrow

I don't have a problem with the heat - if it's too hot to be outside, then we don't go outside. When we walk to any groups we attend, we use the hats and sunblock routine.

My after-schoolchildren today lasted all of five minutes today, then asked if they could come in and watch TV!!

My mother reckons I have weird genes - I was born in the tropics, and spent my first two years there, and lived in Africa for several months as a teenager - and was in my element. Yes, it is very hot, but I much prefer this than being too cold.

Besides, it is a great excuse to make ice lollies!

pecka · 18/07/2006 17:00

Im very worried about tomorrow.

I have DS (2), mindee (2) and mindee (11 months)

I obv want to keep them out of the heat but having work done in the house, living room unuseable, playroom too hot (conservatory) and chaos everywhere else in the house whilst the work is getting done (sofa in the kitchen etc)

No television either

Really am worried!

ThePrisoner · 18/07/2006 21:00

Have you got a soft play centre or playbarn near you? Or a fellow childminder you can visit for the day?

dmo · 18/07/2006 21:32

with the younger children we tend to play out till 10.30 then we go in for snacks and play indoors where its cool, by 2pm its shady so ok to play out
still put loads of suncream on them and seem to be forever saying put your hat on
its funny but you tend to worry more about other peoples children in anything you do

lunavix · 19/07/2006 13:46

We aren't going outside between 10.30 and 3.30.

Ds and I play outside until 10.15, when the paddling pool and that side of the garden is in the shade.

Then after school, he's allowed out again when the best part of the garden is in the shade again.

My mindees are hating the heat and won't go out - as I've said on my panicky thread! It's torture - stuck indoors just like winter, but no energy or air to do anything.

Panicking about outings planned for holidays, travelling will kill us all, just will take lots of drinks, and take it slowly.

You are right this country isn't equipped, in other ones houses have ceiling fans or air con, one story houses, and no stupid hose pipe bans, and it's a less humid heat too.

alison222 · 19/07/2006 13:54

Well, have been out to a playgroup this mornign. The hall was quite cool. My living room faces north and is also cool provided I keep the doors and windows closed - I opened them first thing to let cool air in then closed up again.
I am just about to fill up the paddling pool so the after school kids can splash and cool down when they come home and will stop at the shop for lollies as I have run out. Hopefully this will all do the trick
Hope everyone else is surviving OK?
