Pay before you work or after?

Basically as the title says?

We have arranged to employ a nanny. Everything is looking good although start date is not until January when I go back to work full-time.

Was just discussing/clarifying things. Nanny is currently working as a CM (we used to use her as a CM several years ago with DD1). She has all paperwork etc in place to be CM but is going to be our nanny instead - term time only. This is all sorted.

She has said she is currently paid on the nth of the month before she works. I am pretty sure we used to pay her in advance for childcare when she was our CM. Not sure what we did with next CM (original one stopped CMing for a while) as we paid a monthly fee that covered the childcare for the year.

As a NANNY, do you get paid at the end of the month for the work you have just done (this is how DP and I are paid) or at the end of the previous/start of the month you are about to work? I am sure in the long run it does not make much difference other than for the first/last month - only we had assumed it would be at the end of the month to match our own money coming in.

Before I get back to her - thought I would just see what is the norm for nannies.

Thank you - have to go out with DS but will check in later.

Employees (including nannies) usually get paid in arrears. I cannot think of any job where it's usual to be paid in advance.

as a nanny you get paid at the end of the week or month - most are monthly, but still a few that are paid weekly that i know - i normally get paid last friday of the month or 27/28th as most of my bills come out 1/5th of the month

MissMooMoo · 02/12/2013 12:31

I am always paid on the 30th or the last Friday of the month.

HappyAsEyeAm · 02/12/2013 12:35

We pay our nanny at the end of every month, in arrears, as her contracts says. This is 100% normal.

CMs are often paid in advance and then any adjustments added to the next invoice. Nannies are paid in arrests including any overtime for that month.

As a nanny I have always been paid at the end of the month. Childcare voucher payment may come earlier but I do not get bulk of pay or the payslip until near month end.

Check with payroll company with regard to if they can do payroll such that pay is made at end of month before work is done. Expect they can if the working hours are fixed/gross pay per month fixed.

End of month.

Thank you all. I was expecting to pay in arrears and am glad to see that this is the norm. Now I just have to clarify this with her; I imagine she is dreading a 'tight' January as she will stop CMing in December so I presume was paid at start of December and then there will be no more money/wages until end of January.

Nannynick I guess payroll could organise that as gross monthly pay is the same across the year - but not sure we could find the month's wages easily to pay before the start date in January. Hmm - could maybe give 'advance' to help her out...

Thank you again.

Maybe you could offer to pay her weekly in January to ease the change in how she's paid?

Dysgu · 02/12/2013 22:07

DrinkFeckArseGirls yes we thought that or possibly we could pay her half the month's pay up front and then the other half in arrears.
