Nanny kitty

Hi everyone, I just want to run something by you to get a few opinions. Our nanny has a kitty that we usually put in about £100 at the beginning of the month. She's been with us for a few years, and the system has always been that she she has an expenses book and puts the receipts etc with the book. Sometimes I look at them, mostly I don't. All the dcs activities etc are paid for by me, so the kitty is for any extras. She has always put little "extras" through the kitty, e.g. she goes to pick up stuff at the supermarket, she might put in her newspapers, a snack or treat for herself. I have never said anything as that is absolutely fine with me.

Yesterday, I had reason to look at the receipts and noticed that there are a lot more extras being put through the kitty. Not just her newspaper, but some more expensive treats for herself, and sanitary pads. Out of the last £100 I put in, about £20 of it went this way.

I am somewhat irritated but as she is our much treasured nanny, I was going to remind her to make sure she uses the kitty for work related stuff rather than personal expenses.

As I said, just wanted to get others opinions. Am i right/wrong to be irritated? Is what she's doing normal? Has anyone else come across this scenario. Thanks!

Outraged, my nanny (whom as I said is our much treasured nanny) pays other people for me who come to the house when I am not there. I give her about £200 per week for this(so let's call it £900 per month) to pay various people and then £100 per month for the "nanny kitty". My post was about the £100 a month nanny kitty but overall she handles about £1,000 in cash each month from me to pay various people/expenses. Not quite sure where £5 a week came into it!

As regards the list, I will give you an example of someone who cant read this now and be offended if i was ever outed...my dad. I adored my dad. Love him more than I could express in words. He never would have it on to the list of people I would have left my dcs with, because much as he would have adored them (they were born after he died), he was freakin' useless with money and would have borrowed their money for all sorts of stuff! Grin. Doesn't mean that I wouldn't trust him with all other aspects of their welfare.

Hi Blondes! Yes, I shall definitely be putting diet coke onto the shopping list. Can I derail my own thread and ask how you have been? I was actually thinking about you over the weekend.

'Not quite sure where £5 a week came into it!'

From the whole 'big spend'/'small spend' thing.

My point is, big spends receipts are logged, fair enough. Asking your nanny to write down EVERY penny e.g. 50p for a snack, £1.50 for playgroup etc. is indicative of a lack of trust imo. I think 'small spends' probably add up to £5 a week on average.

And before you ask, the 'writing down every penny' thing came from leo's question about her friend, not your original OP.

Outraged, i see that as my dcs get older, there will be more discretionary spend that can't be accounted for e.g. as you say ice cream here and there, so i see your point.

Blondes, I have been hiding out in S&B for most of this year so I didnt know! That's so so fab! That is going to send me to bed all grinny and happy for you. Grin.
