experienced nanny without formal childcare qualification / salary advice

hi there,

im looking for an advice. im a nanny and just started job hunting. i received my first offer and im confused about the salary. the offer is a live-in position in central london. 4 kids including 1 year old twins, 2 year old and 4 year old. this role is full time , all the typical nursery duties plus housekeeping - cleaning the house, doing family laundry + ironing and prepare homemade dinners with planning and doing grocery shopping for the family as well. occasionally some random errands. babysitting twice per week. 50 hours + per week. / 100 £ per week. im offered a bedroom with shared bathroom. food provided from M-F but not on the weekend.

i politely refused to take her offer and apparently she got mad and emailed me back saying that im lazy and all i care about is money. now, dont get me wrong i`m hardworking and good at multitasking etc but i really think 100 / per week for all that work is not enough.

also im not an au pair who just started, im mature ( 30 ) and like i mentioned i dont have childcare qualification but im well educated with a bachelor degree and i think my English is good, i`m fluent in German and Polish is my mother tongue language. i have 8 years + experience and consistent employment history as a nanny with excellent / checkable references. (i was an au pair for two years, both families with 3 children. one boy with Asperger Syndrome. i was also a live-in nanny for 6 years - for one family, looking after two girls. )

so am i really unreasonable thinking my salary should be higher than 100 £ per week ? and just to be clear, im not after money, i love working with children and im a nanny by choice not because there are no other jobs for me.

i would appreciate your help. thank you :)

Yanbu!! She wants a nanny for an au pairs wage.

They are taking the absolute piss. Unfortunately those sort of people are out there. You did the right thing, move on, look for employment with a nice family. They're out there too!

Cindy34 · 24/11/2013 23:59

I wonder how many aupairs would tell her to get stuffed, £100 a week is more for 25 hours, not 50+

I would have thought £350+ is more like it, probably higher. Look at nannytax salary survey, look at other jobs.

YANBU to say not interested.

She's taking the piss

She wants a nanny but wants to pay an ap wage

4 under 4 is hard work - done it one before - but as a nanny doable - but to ask to do general housework and cleaning as well it's not doable even if paying a decent salary

She's needs a nanny and a cleaner

if h er response hasn't told you what a nightmare this woman will be to work for, the derisory wage for what is a REALLY heavy duty job must! run for the hills, the woman is taking the p*ss royally.
on the lack of qualification - there is some childcare course that can be done part time / distance learning over 6 weeks which is sufficient to count for OFSTED registration - our nanny has just done it as she's the same as you, experience but no quals & we wanted to claim vouchers. The cost was about £200 - might be worth you doing that and becoming ofsted registered as along with the multiple languages and Asperger's experience, plus willingness to take on four tiny children you're a remarkable find for someone!

NomDeClavier · 25/11/2013 11:33

That's absolutely nuts Shock You were quite right to turn it down.

As someone else said if this is a long term career then look at getting qualified because the nanny market is getting really competitive, but a proper level 3 rather than the common core unless you need OFSTED in a hurry.

Artandco · 25/11/2013 11:39

I would say £450 and no housekeeping. How are you supposed to fit that all in and care for 4 under 4? I'm assuming they would want full activities etc with the children

They need a nanny and a cleaner

MaternityNanny31 · 25/11/2013 14:07

She's taking the piss!!! I'd look for £450 net minimum for that!

nannyPL · 25/11/2013 20:23

thank you all. i`ve already received few more offers and like you said the wage is way higher (£300-£450) with only a light housekeeping.

@Leopoldina and NomDeClavier thank you for the suggestions. i will def look at getting qualified after I find my new employment.
