People seem to have different ideas of how to decide what age band a child is working at. Sometime it's more straight cut then others. For instance I have a child who is nearly 39mths who fits all of the 22-36 mth profile for understanding but only one or two sentences in the next age band 30-50mths. My colleague said to put him in the 30-50mths age band as he is secure in the 22-36mth if he is doing all of it and emerging in the 30-50mth is that right???

Sounds right to me. I'm a nursery teacher.

See I wasn't sure as I felt he wasn't doing a lot of things in the 30-50m band so didn't know whether to keep him down. I am sorry I am still learning they do not really cover it at college :-/

Yes. I would say he's completed the lower band and entering the next one. (I just use entering instead of emerging)

This is why the distinction is helpful emerging/some, most/expected, all/expected.

Essentially if he fits all of the lower band (each DM you can have marked off in that band you can say, hand on heart that you have observed several times- he has that skill consolidated.) He has also started emerging into the next DM band. Again, the ones you have highlighted- you consider he has them consolidated.

So he is 30-50 emerging.

In terms of action planning for this little guy, he is making suitable progress, but not thriving. So he still needs monitoring and extra consideration in your planning. Are there any barriers to his involvement? (EAL, SEN etc...)

Allthreerolledintoone · 10/11/2013 12:04

Yes I have placed him on a IEP as his speech was delayed and I made a referral to SALT. He is however making progress with his speech and I moved him up to the appropriate band last term as previously I had him marked down. He is talking in sentences and asking simple questions etc but sometimes his speech is not always audible. Now he is talking etc I've noticed in group time he needs help to focus and listen and so I was wondering whether this was a attention thing or if it was his understanding so these are the areas I need to work on. So he he is emerging in the 30-50mth band but within this band I am guessing this is what I should be working on next. He is an August baby too and has only just started his full 15 hours so I hoping he will progress further.
See we don't mark it as secure and emerging we just mark it as what stage band they are at. He is making progress but as you say he is not thriving. He is being assessed by SALT at the moment so I was weary I making him up to high iykwim. I wish we did make them in secure an emerging as it make more sense.

I know some place but in black secure and red emerging which makes more sense to me.

Cool- if you have made referrals, have an IEP, parents are obviously aware of the concerns- then this child (and you) are doing every thing you need to :)

These tools are supposed to be a diagnosis tool- to highlight where children need extra support, planning, intervention. Which is exactly what you have done!

As long as you can explain & use evidence to back up your assessments, then you are good.

Ok thank you thank you if I mark him as working within the 30-50 mth band and anyone asks I can just say he was secure in the 22-36mth band and working at the lower end of the 30-50mth band?? But needs extra support and import to progress.
