AIBU; Parent bringing lo to me in the middle of a hurricane?

We live in southeast London and, although it isn't technically a hurricane yet, the wind has definitely got worse in the hour I've been up and according to the weather, will peak between 8am and 10am. There are no trains running until at least 9am (probably a lot later). They normally walk to me, it is too bad to push a buggy in these winds, maybe they will drive, I will update.

I have texted this morning to find out what was happening as I hadn't heard from them and now (as I sit here listening to the wind howling and watching the tree bend), I'm a bit in shock that they are bringing Lo!!!

AIBU?

A few years ago, high winds knocked a wall down onto a child out with his childminder in London, so I can understand the Op's concern.
Childminders are generally open to any parents who can get to them.

A shame some posters have taken the opportunity to make the usual silly comments about childminders.

MrsSchadenfreude · 28/10/2013 08:42

You are joking, right? I am in SE London, and as far as I can see (and I've been up since 6) is that it's a bit blowy. Hurricane, my arse! And living on a main road, near three primary schools, I'm watching several Mums pushing a buggy while taking their children to school.

If you were going to close because of the weather a) you should have told the parents with 24 hours notice and b) not charged them.

looneytune · 28/10/2013 09:06

When I was childminding I had parents walk through very thick snow to get to me, my dh even gave a lift at one point as he has a 4x4, I didn't see the problem as we were just staying home based anyway and the parents are able to risk assess themselves before making a decision!

youarewinning · 28/10/2013 09:13

Its not a hurricane - never was.

So why wouldn't they come?

DoubleLifeIsALifeOfSorts · 28/10/2013 09:19

Well this post is a bit silly isn't it! Its not bad at all in London and although you may well want to enjoy a day at home the world carries on

justmuddlingalongsomehow · 28/10/2013 09:35

MrsSchadenFreude are you sure... It's half term!!!

grumpalumpgrumped · 28/10/2013 09:39

Only time I raised an eyebrow was when a parent called to say she thought the snow was too dangerous to drive in so sent her child in a taxi instead, and stayed at home.

MrsPnut · 28/10/2013 09:40

Justmuddling - not everywhere, we had half term last week.

MissMooMoo · 28/10/2013 09:43

yabu! it took me an hour and 40 min to get from East london to north london,as there are no national rail trains I went by tube through central london, my employer was very grateful I came in! im a nanny btw.

Dear All,

As promised, I have returned to update. I am holding my hands up to let you all know that I WAS BEING UNREASONABLE!!!!

I watched too many weather forecasts and convinced myself we would be house bound, power down and all, for days. As it turned out, the sun has been shining for most of the day and apart from being a bit breezy, it's been quite pleasant. I even went out yesterday for

supplies just in case!!!! I feel really foolish now!

Anyway, I did over react and I will admit that at 6am after a poor nights sleep, thanks to my own Lo, I felt I deserved a paid day off, unreasonable I know so please go easy on me.

LO arrived by car and we have had a great day of arts and crafts, so all's well that ends well.:-)

Gracefully done :)

missmapp · 28/10/2013 17:09

Fair enough op- I must admit, I was glad I could stay under the duvet for a bit this morning!

givemeaclue · 28/10/2013 17:54

Good update op

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 28/10/2013 18:16

I like people who can admit their mistakes. Nicely done.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/10/2013 18:45

In your defence my friend has been without power all day - tho been at her works house - first time are wanted to stay late at work Grin

Weather been so so here. Very windy 3/8am and then odd gust

Sadly a girl died in a town a few miles from me - tree fell on where she was sleeping :(

HSMMaCM · 28/10/2013 18:58

Glad you're not so peed off now OP Grin

It was a lovely afternoon wasn't it? After we'd propped up the fence my mindees had fun discovering what had blown into the garden.

wickedwitchofwaterloo · 28/10/2013 19:07

Same MissMooMoo It took me 2 hours to travel West - South East and my employer was beyond grateful Smile

Good update OP and I know what you mean about the pre storm panic, while some areas were badly hit, it wasn't quite the black out post apocalyptic drama we'd been let to believe...

TeamSouthfields · 28/10/2013 19:22

I had a great day with mine... Went to the cinema, mcdonalds (special treat) then back home to make halloween decorations for our party on Wednesday :)

MrsSchadenfreude · 28/10/2013 22:43

Justmuddling - we had half term last week. They may just have been going out somewhere - our nearest primary doesn't have a uniform. I just assumed they were going to school. Maybe a holiday club?

PeedOff - very gracefully done! Good for you!
