What do you do when your own DC is sick for long time,2 weeks or so?How do you sort out things? My DC has had 2 very bad weeks cold, conjunctivitis and tummy bug,had 2 afternoons of for dr appointments one day off as the parents wanted to stay with their DC as not well either and one day off as parents sent us home as they thought the long weekend will ensure a speedier recovery. It's a lot I know, problem is I thought my DC is getting better but now again not well.My husband says to stay home,I would love to but my employers have jobs to go to as well and they don't have any back up childcare.
Any thoughts/ideas much appreciated,thanks.

Your husband needs to take some time off- since you already have- and you go in.

im a nwoc and have been in simalar position.

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately it's not really doable for a no of reasons,we've had this conversation as well.

Did you discuss this at interview? What does your contract say?

Friends who are nwoc either

Have time off unpaid (so that employed can pay for temp nanny)
Use gps/other relatives
Dad looks after
Nanny takes ill child with them to work if employers ok

As hard and harsh as it sounds I think you need to take time off unpaid if have no other back up

Your partner should take time off - it is his son as well and needs to share childcare

I'm happy to take time off unpaid, but employers are not very keen as they have not registered with any temping agency.i took my son to work with me before,I did talk to them early morning explained he was sick spiffy they want me to come in.but last week I spent the night at a&e til 5am feeding him oral solution for dehydration and I was at work with him at 7:45am,I was exhausted. And when DB came home midday I was hoping I could at least go home early, but no,as he was not feeling well.I don't think I would do this another time.As for contract,I have only been employed two and a half months and they said they have not finished it yet(I know legally 2 months,my own fault).

No relatives close by,husband is happy to help but can't this time.Would it be ok to suggest they find some agency to provide emergency cover if necessary?

hmm. tricky. im just over a year in to my first nwoc job and have had some difficulty re kid sickness.

its really tricky. You are employed to care for there child, whether child is sick or not. Only once have my employers taken the day off of their own accord to care for their child- as they were v poorly.

ive cared for both mine and theirs while both sick. that was hell.

I've called in once as mine was barfing somthing awful.

I've left mine with mil (eurgh) as they were sick but knew I had to go in.

and just the once thus far I have agreed to take a day unpaid. all kids and boss was sick.

I have to say- while everything else about the arrangement is great- this has been a royal PITA and im not sure I'd do it again. (*disclaimer im having a particularly bad time with it right now! )

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/10/2013 18:25

Who would pay for the temp nanny?

Not sure if you can demand ask your employers to hire a temp nanny?

Would you leave your child with a temp nanny from an agency and go to work?

TheDoctrineOfAnyFucker · 27/10/2013 18:32

Can you get a temp nanny for your son tomorrow?

november12mum · 27/10/2013 19:18

I am asking as I have not had to deal with this situation before. But I do know all of my previous employers had some kind of emergency cover ie nursery, childminder, babysitter altough I only had 2 days off in 5 years. And no I would not pay for a temp nanny for my son as I would have to work over 2 days to get that sort of money,I have given up 40% of my wages for the privilege of taking my son with me.Anyway, I decided to go into work and deal with the situation as best I can.

COI before I start I don't employ a NWOC but would do so if the right person came along (or if our current nanny had a baby and wanted to RTW as NWOC)

If my DCs are ill on a day my nanny doesn't normally work (they do mix of school, nursery and nanny) I would negotiate with my DH about which of us stays home (usually him as i am a doctor and can't easily be off) or ring the GPS who live 200+ miles away but can come over with 12hrs notice to hold the fort. I'd be pretty pissed off if you were taking lots of time off to look after your child when I'd goiven you the perk of bringing them to work with you - what would you do if you weren't a nanny/ if you were a nurse/teacher/shop worker you'd not consider not having a backupmplan would you?)

TheDoctrineOfAnyFucker · 27/10/2013 22:17

Sleepless, it's not exactly a perk bringing a child, nannies with own child are paid less - it's a different kind of service.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 27/10/2013 22:42

I'm not sure they are always paid less, anyway it's still cheaper to take your own child to work than pay for a childminder or nursery...

sleeplessinderbyshire · 27/10/2013 22:44

PS hadn't seen where the OP said she's given up 40% of wages for being a NWOC, that seems loopy. When we were considering a NWOC compared with another nanny without a child I was thinking £7.50-8 an hour for without and maybe £7 with child. Had no idea anyone would drop the wage so much

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/10/2013 00:01

It's is a perk to take your own child to work as a nanny

No other career would allow it

Often the pay is less tho 40% less is steep but sure is more then if you paid for childcare

november12mum · 28/10/2013 08:16

Could be more Blondes the childcare bill, you are right, but I did make the effort,I did a full day with children sick after a night spent in a&e,I did go in the next day as well,by the time I got to work my own was covered in poo and they sent me home, they said they preferred so.I only took time off for dr appointment as it was necessary.i do the best I can.as for back up cover it should go both ways.thanks all for your replies, just got to work!
