New Job / Extra Pay

Hello, I currently work overseas for a family where I work 7-7 6 days a week but between 9-4 am I free to do as I wish. For this I am paid £300 Net per week. I am starting a new job next month with the hours being 6.30-7.30/8 6 days a week, and during the day I will be doing light cleaning and ironing children's uniforms for a couple of hours each day. The new family know what I am on now and said they would pay that straight into my UK account, but am I right in wanting to ask for a bit more due to longer hours/duties? And does anyone have any suggestions as to what that should be? Or how much extra I should ask for? Thank you.

Bella

Are you a nanny or au pair?

BellaTata · 25/10/2013 12:07

£300 per week net sounds like a good whack to me, given you're only actually working 4 hours a day at the moment. That's £75 per hour!! If i got that rate for a full time job, that would be £130k+ per annum.

If I were you I wouldn't rock the boat, and recognise when you're onto a good thing.

BleedinEck · 25/10/2013 12:31

I agree for 4 hours a day work the hourly rate is good but wouldn't you rather be working during the day and earning considerably more? OP is overseas & presumably there's only a limit to how much you can do between 9 & 4 - I'd much rather work a conventional day of 7-7 and earn double that.
You new job is 6:30/7:30-8pm so with say 2 hours housework & if the kids are out 9-4 that's going to be 2.5-3.5hours before school, 2 hours during & 4 hours after total 8.5-9.5 hours a day so minimum 50 maximum 57 hour week which is £5.25- £6/hr even less if day 6 the children aren't at school & you're on duty all day.

12.5-13.5 hours 6 days a week so a long old slog let alone for £300pw IMO.

BellaTata · 25/10/2013 12:56

I work 7-9 then 4-7 then 12 hours on Saturday = 37 hours which would be around £8 per hour. I understand this may be good but I am not being payed hourly, I get a set wage so holidays I do 12 hour days and still get £300. My new position wants me to do longer hours and more duties for the same set weekly wage, not paying me for the extra 3 or so hours I will be doing each day.

I don't know where you have got £75 from, I make £300 per week not per day.

You do 12 hour days 6 days a week in the holidays and still earn £300pw in an overseas nanny post Shock. I think you should look up some of the jobs advertised with nanny agencies that specialise in overseas postings and then decide if you still want to earn £300pw because I certainly wouldn't. And even if you do still want this new job then yes of course you should earn more for doing longer hours.

BellaTata · 25/10/2013 13:05

This is why I am looking for a new position. Do you have any idea of how much extra I should be asking for? Thank you.

...sorry posted too soon...obviously these are top jobs & it will depend where in the world you are working, what type of family you have & how hard you are prepare to work, but surely one of the major benefits of working away from your friends & family has to be a bigger salary.

nannynick · 25/10/2013 14:50

The new family have offered you a job and are providing board and lodgings, you have agreed to that at the salary they specified. Or are you at a point where you have not accepted the job?

How does taxation work in the country you are in? Make sure you have the paperwork sorted out so that tax is paid where you are and not in the UK.

Is the pay fair for where you are, no idea. Compare it to other local jobs if you can find things to compare it with, given the days/hours and lodgings provided.

BellaTata · 25/10/2013 18:57

They offered me the job and I was about o step out of the door of my trial, with the kids still talking to me etc and they said 'how much are you on now again?' and I told them and they said 'okay well we can just pay that into your uk account.' and I said id prefere it in my uk account and that id talk to the mother about it when I discuss my starting date etc in the next week or so. I should also mention that they are a high profile football family so they can afford it, I just don't want it to look like that's the reason im asking for more.

That's possibly the point you should have stopped dead and renegotiated pay. I don't think it's enough given the jump in work you'll be doing but it depends where in the world you are and what other perks you get.

The situation will be complicated re: tax for you to get paid into your UK account, especially if you're in a country like France where tax is the responsibility of the individual so a net salary actually means net of social security charges and not net in the UK sense.

BellaTata · 25/10/2013 19:56

I have messaged the mum just to see if we could meet next week to discuss my salary, contract and a few final questions I have. I realise I should have brought it up then however it was late and the kids were getting cranky. I guess the worst they can say is no isn't it?! I live in Italy. My current employer takes care of my taxes as I am under his company as an employer so it all goes through his books. Do you happen to know anything about Italian taxes?
