Hi
I've just been called for jury duty... how does this work being a cm? Are you honestly expected to do it? What about your mindees... not to mention my own children?

I did Jury Duty last year - think the only way you can get out of it is if you are:

  1. insane

  2. have certain criminal convictions

  3. did it less than 2 years ago.....

You can defer it - but only once.

Good luck!

Someone (who was doing jury duty at the time so had vaguely looked into getting exemptions) told me that childminders were no more exempt than any other working person. For me, the fact that it would totally disrupt the lives of the eleven families I mind for, even if only for a couple of weeks, would not be taken into consideration.

I would love to know the actual facts though! And do self-employed people get their pay covered?

I wrote and explined whilsyt I was aware I had a duty to do so, it would as ThePrisoner says, it would disrupt all my minded familkies and they would have to find alternative childcare, not easy. I was excused.

NCMA Handbook 2 P.11
Says you can apply to defer or be excused, especially if you care for lots of children from several families, but each application is considered individually and you should be aware that the application can be refused.

I think that I've got out of it for now. I am still bf dd... I am just worried that they will say ok and ask again in 6m or so.
Maybe I should look into extended bf!
alibubbles you've given me hope... will look at the link ayla99
Thanks all

I have done jury service twice while I've been childminding and each time was told other people's children were not my problem. I had to serve 4 weeks the first time and 2 weeks the second time .I did get paid loss of earnings and travel expenses.Have your kids parents write letters stating what fees they pay you so you can claim loss of earnings.
I have to admit I enjoyed being out in the adult world for a change.
