Cleaner dilemma

I know what I should do but just want reassurance that I'm right please. Smile

I'm a live in nanny for a family who are on holiday atm. The cleaner's been in this morning and done a real half arsed job which annoyed me as it is.

But I also suspect her of stealing food from the family and want to check that I should tell the family.

It's half empty and some full things from the cupboard that she's cleaned out. All in a bag and hidden in the cleaning cupboard..

I took a photo as I'm assuming she's planning on taking them when I'm not around. I need to tell the family don't I?

Definitely tell them.

Having said that, is it possible that they told her she could help herself, given the fact that they are away?

Anyway, definitely mention it.

yes, tell them but tell them only what you've seen, rather than your conclusions.

I once worked as a nanny and noticed the cleaner wasn't doing the full time she was being paid for. I am not sure whether me casually saying the stairs hadn't been hoovered came before the employer noticing but she went out before the cleaner had arrived and came back before the time was up (to find the cleaner gone) so knew for herself that she wasn't getting what she was paying for. I told her I didn't think it was my place to tell her but she put no pressure on me for not doing so. I was annoyed though the cleaner was taking the mick. The employer gave the cleaner the option of less time and less money or doing what she was meant to be doing.

I suppose my waffle is to say I sympathise with how difficult you feel this is and to say that the employer would probably appreciate your loyalty in mentioning it even if they have given the cleaner the permission to take stuff. Though what do they think you will eat if she takes the food?

Yes that's what I'm worried about. That there's a perfectly valid excuse and I'll look like I'm just bitching about her.

Just a thought, but do you think they might have asked her to clear out anything that is out of date or goes out of date while they are away? She may just think she is using up their rubbish.

confusedalways · 21/10/2013 19:57

Well I thought that, but a lot of it is still well in date. Some isn't, but most is.

When I was a nanny a new cleaner spent the whole time she was there moaning about what dirty people my bosses were. They weren't at all, lets just as when I told my bosses what I thought if her she never came back again Smile

I had a cleaner who was not doing what I paid her for and not coming when I asked. In addition to it being a problem for me, it was inconvenient for my nanny. I found out when I was working from home. I wish my nanny would have told me, though I can see why she thought it was not her place.
