Do I need to pay my nanny while she is on jury service?

Or can she claim something for being a juror? We might pay her anyway, tbh, but it will cost a lot of time and hassle while she is off. And it's not even school holidays, otherwise I could have had time off with the. DCs!

No, she can claim - see here

Has nanny not asked to be excused from doing jury service at this time, due to her job caring for children?

filee777 · 15/09/2013 20:23

That's not a reason to be excused from jury service cindy.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2013 20:59

i have been asked to do jury service and i got excused as i said employers couldnt survive without me and too much disruption for family finding childcare

also the loss of earnings refund wouldnt even cover a 1/2 of my daily rate at £64.95 (if over 4 hrs) if under 4hrs then £34.47 - pathetic money Hmm

if i worked for a week i would be well and truly out of pocket

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 16/09/2013 10:39

Childminders can be excused so I don't see why nannies can't try especially if they do nanny shares

HSMMaCM · 16/09/2013 10:59

I have heard of nannies and CMs being excused, because of the disruption to their employers and the children. They are an essential employee effectively.

My brother, who is self employed, was massively out of pocket after jury service.

Fridayschild · 16/09/2013 13:35

Thanks all. She is certainly pretty essential to my life! I will talk to her about being excused tonight.

I saws excused in April. My employers quite a letter each staying what they do and why they need me. Was pretty easy to do and they responded quickly. My mum was a child minder and got excused three times!

HappyAsEyeAm · 16/09/2013 16:00

But does she want to be excused, OP?

FlorenceMattell · 16/09/2013 23:33

Yes I was going to say the same, maybe she wants to do jury service, most people could be excused for some reason or other. It is important for juries to have a good balance of people not just those who are not employed or have children.

holidaysarenice · 16/09/2013 23:36

I thought it was you who could claim for a replacement whilst she was on jury service. Beware often they will excuse and u will be called again in precisely one year.

FlorenceMattell · 16/09/2013 23:42

Sorry I meant don't have children, appreciate it is inconvenient OP. How much notice have you had?

ConfusedPixie · 17/09/2013 07:06

Holidays: that wouldn't be an excusal though, that'd be a deferral. You can ask for either.

Fridayschild · 17/09/2013 20:08

She does want to be excused. And she is going on the theory that the police only catch half the miscreants around, if that, so anyone in the dock must be guilty. I am not sure i quite agree with that approach.

We have about 8 weeks notice. We have a plan B but it is not great.
