Pay for live in nannies

I was just wondering how the pay works for live in nannies?

I am going back to shift work in the Wiltshire area and i believe a live in nanny would be better our circumstances as i will be working 12 hour days and nights within the shift rotation

It works out that the nanny will need to work between 60 - 64 hrs a week looking after my DD, however i am struggling to understand how much to pay

Is it net minimum wage or is it gross minimum wage? are expenses on top of that?

I have no clue?!?!

How old is ur child?
Is it sole charge care?
What will u be providing with regards to room and food?
Is it a proper qualified nanny or sn au pair?
Where are u based

You need to agree a gross salary so that you know exactly what you'll be paying out in terms of tax and NI. It will need to be enough for someone to want the job, the going rate varies depending on where you live. You could contact an agency for an idea of the going rate. It will be less than a live out nanny because you'll be providing accommodation and food etc.

When you say expenses do you mean petrol money, money for activities etc? This is of course on top as they are costs incurred as part of the job. I found it easier to provide a weekly kitty and my nanny would give me receipts for bigger things but generally not for small things like activities such as playgroups, snacks etc. If she needed more she asked. If you are expecting her to drive your children then yes an allowance needs to be made for petrol.

My DD will be 10mo when i require the childcare cover, and i can provide the nanny with her own room and all her food It will be sole charge care

yeah i mean petrol money and playgroups and such like activities when i ask about expenses, i'll check the web for some agencies that can help with the wage

60+ hours is a lot so I feel you need to offer more than what may be typical.

I would expect at least £350-£400 a week gross, possibly more.

Start by calculating what you can afford. Try to think about all costs involved.

Will you supply a car or expect nanny to bring their own. What about carseat, switching seats between cars is a pain so you may need two.

Look on a website like nannyjob to compare what parents and agencies are offering in your area.

I also think you'll be looking around £350-400 gross depending on experience and you need to factor in a weekly kitty, employer NICs and the other costs mentioned above.

As you're looking for a live in nanny minimum wage won't apply because they will be living as part of your family, but you will need to bear the expense of them living with you.

You'll also need to pay a payroll company to calculate the tax and NI for you and produce wage slips and p60. Way2Paye are a good company who specialise in nanny payroll.

I would also work on the basis of £400 gross a week/annual salary of £20-£21k.

£6.31 is current min wage. X64 hr = £403.84

I would say you need to pay between £8-10 per hr to attract and compensate for long working hours.

£8-£10 gross an hour would be more typical for live-out nannies outside London, it would be very high for a live-in nanny somewhere like Wilts.

Really? In comparison most are £10-12 net (£13-15 gross) in London atm ( both live in and out)

I have however never been to Wiltshire though but assumed a few £ over min wage as more than averge hours even for nanny plus shift work of days and nights

Wages are very much lower outside of London and the SE. Look up the Nannytax salary survey or local agency ads. £10 gross an hour is a pretty good live out nanny wage in Bristol for example.
