Is this expensive or about right?

I have found a childminder for my DD and she spent a few weeks with her last half term (I'm a teacher) and seemed to have a nice time and be well cared for.
She charges £5 per hour, and gives her breakfast but I provide lunch, snacks and nappies/wipes. I drop her off before school at 8.15 and pick her up at about 3.40 after they arrive back from picking her own daughter up from school. I then do my own extra work/planning when she's asleep in the evenings.

She does not charge me for the school holidays when I am off, so I am paying £35 a day term time only plus food and nappies.
My DP thinks this is a lot but I think it's a fairly good deal, other arrangements seem to be at least £10 a day more and at least some charge for the holidays. I live in the South East. Like to hear your thoughts!

Bargain I would say! Maybe even under charging

JustPanicking · 29/07/2013 14:56

Bargain! I am also a teacher and thought I was doing well only paying half the daily rate in the school holidays.

Littlefish · 29/07/2013 15:00

That sounds really cheap to me!

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/07/2013 16:09

where in the south east, assume brighton lol but yes thats a real bargain, im in kent and some charge £6/7ph

MaryPoppinsBag · 29/07/2013 17:30

Great price if you do t pay I the hols.
Also don't forget she could work until 6 and earn more.

That sounds like the day rate round here (Yorkshire) 10 hours at £3.50.

CHEAP! If you are in the south east. I'm about 10 mins drive from brighton and I'd charge you £65 as a daily rate and I'd want full few during the school hols to hold your place.

You're lucky she doesn't charge you 8am-6pm and at least half in the holidays - most where I am would.

brightonbythesea · 29/07/2013 20:48

It's about 35 minutes from Brighton into the countryside. She charges only for what she does, so if I was to pick up my little one later I would get charge the extra. She looks after other children who stay later.

She's so flexible, I think I'm pretty lucky and I thought it was pretty reasonable - thanks for confirming - DP is reading this thread right now :-)

I live in Hertfordshire and pay £4 an hour pre reception age, £4.50 post reception age. Includes all food.

Bargain.

£6 ph round here (outer l

£6 ph round here (outer London) and have to pay for holidays too

olympicsrock · 30/07/2013 10:54

I think considering she doesn't charge for holidays she is very reasonable.

flatmum · 30/07/2013 10:58

that's a great deal, CMs who don't charge for holidays are a rarity and save you a lot of money over the year. Tell your husband to check out the local day nursery which would charge £50-60 for a school day and you'd have to pay for 51 weeks a year regardless of whether you used it or not.
