am a SAHM but am thinking of looking for a nanny for one day a week. i imagine this would be fairly easy as many mums work 4 days a week so their nanny would be free the other day. anyone any experience of this? tia.

I wanted a nanny for half a day a week and had no problem finding one as long as I was flexible about which half day.

I run a local nannyshare register for a parenting group (basically trying to match up local families who want to share a nanny) and there are always loads of people who want 3 or 4 days but hardly any who want 1 or 2, so I would guess you'd be in demand!
Try www.sharingcare.co.uk (there's a link at the top of this thread! - I got my share family from them).
There are a few other similar websites if you search for them.
Also some nanny agencies will help by trying to match families needs so that nanny gets a full week's work (or sometimes they have nannies with other commitments (own child etc) who is only looking for a part-time job.
Good luck.

Tutter - I'm also at home atm, and on the verge of getting a nanny one day a week. You're right about having to be flexible on days - with this particular nanny it will have to be Monday.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has a nanny just on Mondays, and how that works for you - my reservation is that I feel quite rested on Mondays, having had dh's help all weekend!

My nanny comes to me one day a week and it's fine. To start with she only worked for me (she's doing a distance degree in child psychology), but recently she took on a second job, 3 days a week. When I originally advertised I got dozens of replies, mostly from students, some of whom were very well qualified. That could be a good route for you, if you interview with care.
