One of my parents is looking into changing her hours to term-time only. She has enquired with me how much i would charge her as a retainer during the holidays- and i don't know what to charge her! I just wondered what others charge? thanks in advance x

I'm a teacher so only use childcare during term time. Most cm have not charged me anything as they have other children that they mind during the holidays. Others have charged me a half rate but that is unusual.

I pay my CM half rate during school hols. I work it out over the year so that I pay her the same each month, which suits us both.

looselegs · 04/07/2013 21:46

Nonsensical I do the same. I don't charge a retainer for the holidays, but I do spread the cost over 12 months. It works out cheaper for the parents, and it means that I still get paid during the hols.

I pay half rate and have done with both my childminders, but I can then also use them occasionally - although I never have!

Thanks for the responses- i like your idea looselegs- i can't afford to not get anything through the holidays as i don't take on any extras through the holidays but splitting it over 12 months would i work for us both- i think :/ thanks x

I do term time only and don't charge holidays. I do same as others , work it out over the year and divide by 12 so I still get paid every month.

I use a CM term time only for my son and don't pay a retainer for any school hols. I pay monthly for the hours used each month meaning my bill varies from month to month.

Runoutofideas · 05/07/2013 09:40

I only offer term time contracts so I don't charge anything in the holidays. mainly as I don't work them and I don't want to have to be available. I don't average it out over the year - Parents get billed at the start of the month for that calendar month. A month which includes school holidays costs less than a month where they are at school.

fivesacrowd · 05/07/2013 14:16

I do same as runoutofideas though every July I wish I was more organised and set aside money each month to make up for my 7 weeks with no income! It suits me not to work school hols and spend time with my own dc - makes up for having to fight with mindees for my attention the rest of the year.

MUM2BLESS · 05/07/2013 21:30

I do not charge mine a retainer if they only use me in the term time. I would hope that my parents would still use my services when the school hols have finished.

Stickhasgrownup · 08/07/2013 20:02

I have termtime only contracts and can't afford not to charge anything for holidays so I charge a minimal amount of £5 or £10 a day depending if they are full days or school pickups.
However I only charge this for if I am at home. I still take 4 weeks unpaid holiday a year as I am not available every day in the school holidays.
I also work out my pay over 12 months and split it evenly so that I earn the same every month (baring deductions for sickness).

HSMMaCM · 08/07/2013 20:50

I would charge full fee all year, because I don't do term time only. If a parent were to pay me full fee for the holidays, they could use any day they have paid for.
